Sail protocol week 4: Sailing to Whitehaven Beach

Sail protocol week 4: Sailing to Whitehaven Beach

After we ended the work in Airlie for the week, we were ready for a sailing trip to Whitehaven Beach.

We had expected that Whitehaven would be a highlight of the fourth sailing week. However, spending the time to explore the other places around Whitsunday Island and climbing on the Whitsunday Peak made it quite difficult to choose a favorite.

At the beginning of the week on Hamilton Island

Before we could sail to Whitehaven Beach, we took a course on Hamilton Island to pick up Haylea from the airport.

port of Hamilton Island

Since there are no anchorages in or around Hamilton Island, we decided to spend the night at a berth in the Hamilton Island Marina.

The entrance to the marina was a little tight, with luxury boats worth several million dollars that surrounded us on each side, we were sure to be particularly careful to avoid bumps. Since the port traffic is so tight, we also had to arrive by radio shortly before the sailing club and wait for the "concierge service" to escort ourselves to the berth.

During sailing, we usually always stick to free public anchorages instead of paying for marinal places. We definitely used the comfort that the calm birth offered and the unfeded hot showers.

Haylea the crew occurs at

Haylea flew from Sydney to Hamilton Island Airport and joined us on June 19 on the sail of the Daintree.

Hamilton Island sunsets

one of the best and most popular places for sunsets on Hamilton Island is a small hill on the side of the island, which is known as One Tree Hill.

Since we only had one day after Hayleas to explore Hamilton Island, we made the best of it by looking at the sunset over the Whitsunday Islands.

Sailing according to Whitehaven Beach

The next day we got the red sails of the junk and sailed to Whitehaven Beach.

It took about three hours to sail from Hamilton Island Marina to anchorage at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach.

No wonder that they describe Whitehaven Beach as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A huge, 5 km long section made of pearl white sand meets the clearest, glassy water.

On the edge of the sand, the classic green tones of the Australian bushland with sand and water and form a scenery that is nowhere else in the world.

We spend the rest of the day swimming, test my new underwater housing and manage to take some of my favorite air shots of this amazing beach.

hill admission

One of the most popular activities when sailing to Whitehaven Beach is visiting the incredible Hill Inlet.

hill inlet is a flat sand strudel that cuts deep into Whitsunday Island on the north side of Whitehaven Beach.

Unfortunately, you don't get the true feeling of this landscape from the sea or from the country. Instead, there is a viewpoint on the other beach edge.

For those with more bags, a helicopter flight via Hill Inlet could also be considered.

Sailing according to Whitehaven Beach-Tongue Bay Anchorage

Although the weather conditions were excellent, the anchorage on the beach is not a popular anchorage for the night due to the limited protection. The famous thin, white sand is not the best place to keep an anchor.

Instead, we sail for an hour to anchorplatz Whitehaven Beach, known as Tongue Bay.

Tongue Bay is located on the north side of Whitehaven Beach, right behind the famous Hill Inlet.

While we are planning to check the Hill Inlet viewpoint for the sunrise, our plans were unfortunately put on hold because Marine Parks proved all ships to clear the area. Apparently, some helicopter missions were planned in preparation for the Whitehaven Beach Run.

Whitsunday Island Anchorage-Hafen of CID

instead we sail around Whitsunday Island to the popular anchorage Cid Harbor.

This is a very well protected bay with beaches that line the side of the island. There is also a small island called Cid Island, which is located on the west side of Whitsunday Island.

Incidentally,

Cid Harbor also has the highest rate of shark attacks in Australia. Last year alone there were four attacks in the same bay. There are signs both in the water and on the beaches that warn people.

Although I think it is probably due to the chaos caused by the hundreds of swimmers in the summer months, I did not want to take the risk.

ascent of Whitsunday Peak

After enjoying the anchorage and avoided the water, we decided to make the morning hike to the Whitsunday Peak. This is the highest point on Whitsunday Island and should be on the list of everyone who sails according to Whitehaven Beach or Whitsunday Island.

The hike is quite steep and took about an hour and a half to reach the summit.

The view extends over both sides of the island, from Hamilton to the Great Barrier Reef.

Return home-Airlie Beach

As you know, there is no stable 4G connection on the islands. So we drove back to Airlie Beach to work for the weekend.

It somehow felt at home after we had anchored our favorite place right in front of the Marina fragment wall for the third time.
