American Airlines cancels flights to Cuba: vacation dreams shattered!
American Airlines has asked the United States Department of Transportation to significantly reduce the number of flights to Cuba. This request, submitted on June 9, 2025, includes the cancellation of all connections to Santiago de Cuba. The main reason for this measure is the low demand for travel to Cuba, especially during the summer months. This development is also reinforced by US policy, which recently restricted many visas for Cubans and citizens of six other countries.
The airline expects a significant decline in flights between Cuba and the United States, which could potentially lead to financial difficulties. American Airlines plans to supplement the temporary suspension of a limited number of flights through the end of the 2025 summer season. The routes from Miami to Havana and Santiago de Cuba are particularly affected, although there is the possibility that the route to Santiago will be completely eliminated.
Reduced flight frequencies
In its application, American Airlines hopes to receive approval to reduce daily flights to Havana from Thursday to Sunday to a maximum of three flights on Monday and to four flights on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, certain frequencies for flights to Camagüey, Holguín, Matanzas/Varadero and Santa Clara will remain unchanged. In recent years, several airlines have suspended services to Cuba due to low demand, including Edelweiss and Condor, with the Cuban government taking over Condor's service to avoid losing more travelers.
In addition to the air travel challenges, the United States has strict regulations prohibiting travel to Cuba for tourism purposes. Under current regulations, travelers from the United States are only allowed to travel to Cuba for certain reasons, including family visits, official business, journalistic activities and humanitarian projects. These strict regulations make it challenging to visit Cuba for tourism purposes.
Travel requirements
There is a special 'Cuba Ready' booth at Miami Airport where travelers can have their documents checked and get their boarding pass stamped. Changes to baggage restrictions were also updated in mid-March 2023 and additional checked baggage fees may apply.
