MSC or TUI: Which cruise is the better choice for you?
The market for cruise offers in Germany is diverse, especially when it comes to choosing between MSC Cruises and TUI Cruises. MSC Cruises, founded in Italy in 1960, has established itself as a major player with a market share of around 10%. In comparison, TUI Cruises (Mein Schiff Fleet), which has existed since 2009 and is a joint venture between TUI AG and Royal Caribbean, ranks tenth among the largest cruise lines worldwide with a market share of around 2.4%. While TUI Cruises currently has eight ships, MSC plans to introduce another ship by the end of 2025, bringing the total to 23.
MSC Cruises' variety of routes is remarkable and covers numerous dream destinations. The main destinations include the Mediterranean with countries such as Italy, Spain and Greece, as well as Northern Europe, the Caribbean, South America and even Asia. For families and couples, MSC offers an exciting cruise experience with an average audience of 41 years.
Included services and entertainment
The included services differ significantly between the two providers. While MSC Cruises offers three daily meals in buffet and a la carte formats, drinks are not included in the price. An all-inclusive drinks package is available, but at a cost of 39 euros per day for adults and 17 euros for children. Entertainment options are plentiful and include Broadway shows, aqua parks and various leisure options such as saunas, although these must be used at an additional cost.
In contrast, TUI Cruises' offer includes most food and drinks, including around 140 drinks that are included in the price of the trip. The spa and sports area can be used free of charge, and the cabin service is also double. The TUI fleet also offers a relaxing atmosphere with theater performances and special reading tours.
Child friendliness and dress code
Both shipping companies offer child-friendly offers. While MSC has an extensive children's program with theme parties and special activities for children, TUI Cruises provides entertainment with workshops and children's clubs. The ambience on the ships also differs: MSC creates an international, elegant ambience, while TUI maintains an elegant but more casual style.
As for the dress code, MSC recommends evening wear, although there is no set dress code. TUI, on the other hand, prefers casual clothing that ensures relaxed holiday moments. Tipping is mandatory with MSC (10 euros per night), while with TUI Cruises it is included in the travel price, but can be given additionally.
Price comparison and conclusion
A price comparison shows that a seven-day Canary Islands cruise with TUI Cruises starts at 949 euros for an inside cabin, while MSC Cruises only charges 709 euros for the same cabin, but without free drinks. In the end, the choice between the busy MSC fleet and the quieter TUI fleet depends heavily on travelers' individual preferences and budget. The decision is largely influenced by the desired atmosphere, the included services and personal interests.
