About Tembeling Nusa Penida

If you are looking for an epic forest adventure with monkey and steep field paths down to remote bathing spots in Nusa Penida, you should definitely visit the Tembeling Beach.

This beach is located on the west coast of Nusa Penida near Bali. You will find it between other worthwhile attractions such as Kelingking Beach and Peguyangan Waterfall.

You will not find tourist buses or large groups that visit this place, which means that you can probably enjoy the "secret" white sandy beach, unique tembeling forests, natural pools, limestone caves and some fantastic cliff jumps.

Apart from that, the journey here is a bit like a wild journey! I would definitely not recommend it if you didn't drive a motorcycle in the field.

How do you get to the Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida?

The only way to get to Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorcycle. You can get this in your accommodation or in the many rental shops at the port.

A daily rent costs between 50,000 and 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter.

Alternatively, if you want to save yourself the annoying exchange business, you can book Rupiah in advance on this website.

What you want to do is to go to the PIN below. If you simply enter "Tembeling Beach" in Google Maps, you will quickly find that it is not that easy.

As soon as you arrive on the needle, you will notice a small warning and a hut. From here the very steep descent begins down to Tembeling Beach. Note that this street is eroding, bumpy, steep and very tight. If you are not sure, let your bike stand at the beginning of this street and go down.

hiking or motorcycle?

After a few years of backpacking in Asia, I would still say that this street is one of the "hectic" scooter missions that I have ever been on. Apparently many motorcycle accidents happen on Nusa Penida, and this special place is a good example of why.

Again, I don't want to draw a wrong picture and maybe I'm a bit dramatic. But I write this because I know that many people come to Bali and Nusa Penida to learn to drive. This is definitely not the place for it!

Haylea and I drove down on a bike, but she had to descend a few times to go some of the steep sections. I would not recommend driving two people on the bike through the forest path to Tembeling Beach!

The descent takes about 30 minutes instead. So if you are not sure, leave your bike upstairs and enjoy the hike instead!

Alternatively, you are lucky to meet a group of local people who are sitting at the junction at the hut. These opportunistic characters quickly offer you a return trip by bike for 50,000 Rupiah.

Alternative: Best of Nusa Penida from Bali

Although Nusa Penida is definitely smaller in Bali, I would not say that it is possible to visit all the attractions in one day.

If you only plan a day trip from Bali, you would like to do the best possible price-performance ratio.

Unfortunately there are no excursions that include a visit to the Tembeling Beach, the forest and the natural pool. However, if you choose one, I would suggest the one below, visit the Broken Beach, Crystal Bay and Kelingking, with an included speedboat transfer.

Tembeling Beach natural pools & forest

Finally, you will reach the lower scooter car park for Tembeling Beach, Forest and Natural Pools on Nusa Penida. In contrast to many of the popular attractions on the island, you do not have to pay for your bike or for admission!

From this point it is a pleasant walk over concrete levels through the forest of Tembeling Beach. On the way they come past some blue lagoons and natural pools.

It is possible to jump into these pools. The bigger jump is about 5 meters high and the pool below is deep enough to not touch it. Just make sure that you always carry out a deep check.

The main attraction of Tembeling Nusa Penida is the large blue pool created by human -handed blue pool, which is fed by a directed water flow. You will find this natural pool just before Tembeling Beach. During our visit we shared the whole place with a local character that really seemed to enjoy his shower.

Tembeling beach

Immediately around the corner of the natural pools on the Tembeling Beach you will find a low entrance to a small cave. If you look through here, see thousands of Cairns (stone heaps).
