Vacation at a bargain price: These countries are now super cheap!

Rising costs of living are causing problems for German households. This is shown by a current study by the Federal Statistical Office, which highlights price differences for restaurant and hotel services in Europe. German holidaymakers should therefore be aware of which travel destinations offer them not only cultural but also financial advantages. Particular attention is paid to comparing price levels in different European countries.

The most expensive travel destinations can be found in Switzerland and Iceland. Prices in Switzerland are 52% higher than the German level, followed by Iceland with 49% higher costs. Denmark (28% more expensive) and Norway (25% more expensive) are also increasing travel budgets. At 8%, Sweden only shows a moderate increase in prices compared to Germany.

Cheap travel destinations in Europe

Overall, however, there are various countries where vacations are significantly cheaper. Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria top the list: restaurant and hotel services here cost around 52% less than in Germany. Montenegro follows with 42% lower prices, Portugal with 35% and Turkey with 31% discount on the German price level.

country Price difference compared to Germany
Albania -52%
North Macedonia -52%
Bulgaria -51%
Montenegro -42%
Portugal -35%
Türkiye -31%
Malta -30%
Spain -25%

Travelers to other European countries such as the Czech Republic and Poland also benefit from lower prices, which are 33% and 15% below German levels, respectively. France, at 3%, and Austria, with a similar price level, also show hardly any price increases compared to Germany.

Entrance fees to regulate tourism

Some destinations are showing an interesting development in terms of tourism regulation. An entry fee is being introduced in South Tyrol to control the growing flow of tourists. This measure could also be adopted by other countries in order to both protect the local population and make tourism offerings sustainable.

This data makes it clear that it can be worthwhile for German holidaymakers to choose the right travel destinations. You can save a lot of money by taking a strategic look at the price differences. Further information about the price levels is available below Mercury and Destatis to find.
