14-year-old from the Lower Rhine is planning to cross the Atlantic on a sailing ship!
Jamie, a 14-year-old boy from Straelen, dreams of great adventures on the open sea. He grew up on the Lower Rhine, spent the first years of his childhood there and sees the sea almost every day. His fascination for water became apparent early on, as he began surfing as a small boy. For Jamie, the sea is not just a surface of water, but a vast space full of possibilities. His biggest goal: crossing the Atlantic on a sailing ship.
The idea of crossing the Atlantic is not just a teenager's dream. The route that Jamie has in mind starts in the Canary Islands and leads via Cape Verde to Barbados. The route from the Canary Islands to Cape Verde extends over 830 nautical miles and can be completed in an average time of around 7 days. The fastest ships only need 5 days, while slower boats take up to 9 days to complete the passage. In order to get to know the challenges involved and the beauty of crossing the sea, an important stop is planned in Mindelo in Cape Verde.
The challenges of crossing the Atlantic
The subsequent route from Mindelo to Barbados is significantly more extensive and extends over 2,020 nautical miles. Crews typically have an average travel time of 15 days, with the fastest ships able to reach their destination port in just 11 days. But there are also reports of difficult conditions, such as one case where a ship took 23 days due to engine failure and weak winds. Nevertheless, the average speed for this route is relatively constant at 5.3 knots.
The total time for the entire trip is therefore an average of 25 days. This is three days longer compared to a non-stop Atlantic crossing, taking into account the length of stay in Cape Verde. Jamie is aware of the challenges such a journey brings. Nevertheless, he can't imagine anything better than becoming part of this adventure and experiencing the immensity of the sea in all its splendor.
As he prepares for his Atlantic crossing, Jamie not only motivates himself but also inspires others around him. His fighting spirit and determination show that dreams, even the biggest ones, are attainable if you are willing to work hard for them.
