Adventure in the Tatras: A man from Altdorf climbs twelve peaks in eight days!

Traveling to the High Tatras and Western Tatras is a fascinating opportunity for mountain lovers who want to travel in a climate-friendly way. In his travel report, Gunther Reichenbach from the German Alpine Club (DAV) Altdorf reported in detail about his eight-day tour, which not only included extraordinary landscapes, but also the use of public transport to make the journey possible. The DAV has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030, which is supported with initiatives like this tour. Three years ago, Reichenbach presented a map with over 600 huts in the Alps that can be reached from Nuremberg in one day by public transport. This shows the growing efforts to make traveling to the Alps easier and environmentally friendly.

Reichenbach's journey to the Tatra Mountains begins in Passau, where he stays overnight in a cycling and hiking hotel. The next morning he travels on to Bratislava and finally to the Tatra Mountains. On the first day of his tour he arrives in Stary Smokovec, where he reaches the first hut, the Zamkovskéo Chata, after over two hours. The report makes it clear that planning the tour is easy, as the range of planning tools for public travel is growing rapidly. The tour portal alpenvereinaktiv.de enables tours to be filtered according to travel options and thus makes planning easier for those who want to travel sustainably.

The stages of the hike

Reichenbach's second stage leads to Zbojnica Chata, which he reaches in 3.5 hours. Here he enjoys a summit climb without luggage in the afternoon. On the third day he goes on a hike to Lake Poprad. Unfortunately the weather is not ideal and after consulting the mountain rescue service, the route is described as feasible. He stays in a six-bed room, which offers a communal experience with other hikers.

On the fourth day we climb to Rysy, the highest mountain in Poland. This climb takes 3.5 hours and the summit is heavily trafficked. Reichenbach is relegated to the Polish side. Day five takes him to the Five Lakes Region, where he chooses a more demanding route and arrives at Schronisko Murowaniec at half past four. This scenic stage is part of the increasing range of mountain tours in the Alps that can also be reached by public transport.

An unforgettable Alpine adventure

The hike on the sixth day is a panoramic experience to the Hali Ornak Hut. Mystical atmospheres passing through clouds and an evening with live music in the hut create unforgettable impressions. On the seventh day we head to the Western Tatras, where we deviate from the normal route due to fog and reach a total of twelve peaks. He finally arrives at Tatliakova Chata.

The last day begins with an early start. Suddenly the weather becomes unsettled and a thunderstorm forces him to return to the hut. Nevertheless, he manages to descend into the valley in time, where he arrives at the bus stop for the return journey on time. These experiences highlight not only the beauty of the Tatras, but also the need to explore nature in a sustainable way.

Efforts to provide climate-friendly travel options are supported by alternative transport options such as mountain buses, which are offered in some DAV sections. These bus connections are particularly useful for regions without public transport connections, with the Munich Bergbus and the Allgäuer Bergbus, for example, enabling regular journeys, even for non-members. In order to find the best options, interested parties should ask their section directly and take the time to plan their trips sustainably. This means everyone can enjoy the impressive Alpine landscapes without unnecessarily polluting the environment.
