Farewell to cult figure Damerl: Speedway stadium in mourning

The speedway sport in Olching is mourning the loss of a very special personality: Thomas Strebl, better known to many as “Damerl”, has died at the age of 64. His passing deeply affected not only MSC Olching, but also the entire speedway community. The club's chairman Martin Smolinski, who had known him for over 30 years, expressed his sadness at the loss of a friend and companion who was considered a cult figure in the stadium in recent decades.

For many, Damerl was an unmistakable part of the MSC Olching. He was often seen wearing his trademark gray fedora as he carried out his many duties. He was not only a mechanic and supported drivers like Smolinski on the sand track, but also an event representative who carried out many organizational tasks in the background. As a stadium announcer, he was known for his sense of humor and always ensured the right atmosphere in the stadium.

A special kind of souvenir

A special sign of his connection to the sport and his friends was an incident during a training session when Smolinski injured his hand. Strebl then wore two cut fingers from Smolinski's glove on his hat, which for many in the stadium was a symbol of his loyalty and humanity.

In addition to his passion for speedway, Thomas Strebl was also an enthusiastic motorcyclist. He was particularly fond of the Harley-Davidson brand. He was also musically active and played both drums and spoons, which underlined his creative side. His independent caretaker service included not only stadium maintenance, but also the care of privately used properties.

Critical tones and the future of the club

The mourning for Strebl comes at a difficult time for MSC Olching. In one of his last posts on Facebook, Thomas Strebl expressed concerns about irresponsibility within the club. He noted that Mr. Lochner's integrity had been questioned by some and stressed the need to maintain the club with honesty and respect. The application for the SEC was submitted before its term and members are called upon to take responsibility.

Martin Smolinski describes Thomas Strebl as a unique personality whose humor and commitment to the club will remain unforgettable. In these difficult days, his presence in the stadium will be sorely missed, and the memories of “Damerl” will remain alive in the hearts of his friends and companions. In addition, his efforts to advance the club and the sport of speedway will not be forgotten.

You can rely on the words of Martin Smolinski: “We will miss him, in every respect.” The Speedway family lives on in memory of Thomas Strebl.
