Alarming Statistics: These Mediterranean Cities Are Dangerous for Tourists!

The dream holiday on the Mediterranean: turquoise water, warm sand and refreshing drinks. But the reality can be much less relaxed for tourists in some cities because there is a high level of crime there. Recent statistics show that travelers should exercise extra caution to avoid becoming victims of thefts and other crimes. A recent platform called “Numbeo” has created a crime index that measures perceptions of safety in cities. The index ranges from 0 to 100, with a higher value indicating a greater feeling of crime. The West reports on the ten cities in Europe that appear particularly risky for tourists.

The list starts with Catania, Sicily, which comes in 10th place. Tourists here are faced with overpriced taxi rides, broken-in rental cars and pickpocketing. Rome follows in 9th place, where there is an alarming number of 6,071 advertisements per 100,000 inhabitants and the risk of theft is particularly high at Termini station. In 8th place is Bari, known for property crime and fraud, before Barcelona joins them in 7th place. The theft rate in this Spanish city is 50 percent higher than in Madrid.

Critical cities for travelers

The ranking continues with Thessaloniki (6th place) in Greece, where travelers should be particularly careful in the evenings. Nice in France, which ranks 5th, struggles with a high rate of pickpocketing during peak season. Montpellier is in 3rd place and shows an increasing number of property crimes on public transport. Naples follows in 2nd place, known for problems with youth gangs and organized theft, while Marseille takes the sad first place for the highest crime rate. This city has a murder rate of 2.7 per 100,000 residents and locals advise against walking at night.

Despite the high crime rates, experts do not warn against avoiding the cities mentioned completely. Rather, caution is advised and damage minimization is possible. Loud Mercury Tourists should carry valuables close to their bodies, avoid conspicuous jewelry and be particularly vigilant in tourist areas. With a little preparation and the right awareness, a vacation in these cities can also be a wonderful experience.
