Batu Cermin cave Labuan Bajo - Flores

Batu Cermin cave Labuan Bajo - Flores

The Batu-Cermin cave in Labuan Bajo is a limestone tunnel and cave system that is translated into Indonesian as a "mirror cave" or "mirror rock". The Batu Cermin cave is no more than 4 kilometers from the city center and is a perfect stopover on a day trip by Labuan Bajo.

This cave was popular by the reflective light, which is seeped through the cave roof and reflected by the various "mirror rock" surfaces, which in turn illuminated entire sections of the cave.

How do you get to the Batu Cermin cave Labuan Bajo?

The best way to get to the Batu Cermin cave is to rent a motorcycle in Labuan Bajo and drive it yourself. You can pick up a motorcycle along the main street between 65,000 Rupiah and 75,000 Rupiah. This is a little more expensive than what we usually find in Indonesia. However, after we had wasted too much time to get a "fair price", we gave in and accepted the excessive rental price for Labuan Bajo (thank you, rich diving tourists)

As soon as you have your bikes, you just have to follow Google Maps to the PIN embedded below. You can expect a 15-minute drive from Labuan Bajo to the Batu-Cermin cave.

While the pin is correct, Google tends to try to navigate it on an unpaved road, which, as we found out, leads them into a dead end. Instead of turning right onto an unpaved path in the curve of the main street (JL Bukit Cinta), follow the curve and drive another 100 meters away. Then turn right onto a paved road, which finally leads to the Batu-Cermin cave.

Arrival to Labuan Bajo-You can book a cheap domestic flight to Labuan Bajo (also known as Komodo-LBJ) with daily connection flights to Denpasar on Bali for $ 50 to $ 80. Here you can compare cheap flights to Komodo Airport.

Guided tour option

If you would like to travel in a large group or prefer to visit the Batu Cermin cave together with some other highlights, you should consider this Full Labuan Bajo Day Tour.

Although I have not booked this tour, it includes a boat trip to another blue water swimming cave, which is known as a ranko cave, the sunset viewpoint Amelia Sea View and of course the mirror cavity of Batu Cermin.

If you will book in the end, please let me know how it was!

What you can expect in the Batu Cermin Höhle Labuan Bajo

When arriving, it immediately becomes clear that this cave is well positioned for tourism, with information boards, a registration switch and even a few small stands that are waiting for you at the entrance.

When visiting around noon, the place was almost deserted. We finally met a few small travel groups, but it definitely did not leave a sour taste on the well -known tourist trap

You also don't need a guide to explore the cave. However, I would assume that if you are in a large group, I would be offered to rent one.

Cave entry price

The admission price for the Batu-Cermermin cave is 50,000 Rupiah per person. This is a little steep when you consider that they do not deliver flashlights or a helmet. However, after I have explored the cave and took a few pictures for over an hour, I would say that it is worth the price.

After you have paid, follow a marked path to the cave system. To the left of the main cavity is a small cave input through which you have to squeeze to get access to the Mirror Rock Cave.

Since it is a cave, it is completely dark and you have to bring a light source. We forgot our headlamps to just illuminate the way with our telephones.

Mirror cave from Batu Cermin?

When you follow the tunnels, you will finally reach the last room known as Baru Cermin Mirror Rock. This narrow tunnel is illuminated by the reflecting reflections and sparkles in the rocks due to the salt deposits.

Tips for visiting Batu Cermin

Here are some quick tips for visiting the Labuan Bajo Batu Cermin cave.

  • Depending on the season, you should visit the cave between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Since the hole in the roof is quite small, the sun must be at the perfect place for the mirror effect.
  • bring a headlamp with you when you have one. If you do not rent a private travel guide, nobody will be offered.
  • Take care of the bats. Avoid any flash photography of the bats that are extremely sensitive to light.
