Groundbreaking ceremony for the new forest adventure center in Mehlmeisel – a showcase project!
On July 6, 2025, the construction of a new forest adventure center officially began in Mehlmeisel with a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony. Forestry Minister Michaela Kaniber described the construction as a significant step for forest education in Bavaria and the region. The aim is to make the forest accessible to all the senses and to promote environmental education. The forest adventure center will be built as a modern, barrier-free wooden structure in the form of a horizontal branch fork at the planned location opposite the forest house of the Mehlmeisel Wildlife Park.
Investments of up to 7.4 million euros have been approved for the center, provided by the Bavarian State Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism. The construction is being carried out by the Bayreuth State Building Authority and is expected to be completed in the next two years. The total area of the building is around 400 square meters and includes a spacious foyer as well as a multifunctional hall for workshops and events.
Sustainability and modern technology
The forest adventure center is made entirely from the renewable raw material wood and is considered a showcase project of the Bavarian timber construction offensive. A climate-friendly heat supply via wood pellet heating is used. A photovoltaic system is also planned to contribute to a sustainable energy supply. The building's generous visual axes and direct access to the forest promote the connection between the interior and nature.
The goal of completing the center is to bring citizens and visitors closer to sustainable forest management. It is aimed at locals, school classes and tourists. Forest education has been a statutory educational mandate of the Bavarian Forestry Administration for more than 25 years and there are currently twelve forest experience centers in Bavaria that are dedicated to this task.
Forestry Minister Michaela Kaniber presented the plans for the forest adventure center as early as 2023, and the approval of the financial policy spokesman for the Free Voters state parliamentary group was given in December 2024. The project is described as a lighthouse project for the region and is intended to make a valuable contribution to environmental education and the promotion of forest education in Upper Franconia.
The scheduling of construction work and the detailed execution of the project will be closely monitored in order to continue to monitor the progress of the center. The forest adventure center in Mehlmeisel is not only a new building, but also an important step towards promoting nature education and sustainable development in the region.
