Visit to the Little Blue Lake in Tasmania

A short guide to visit Little Blue Lake Tasmania. An epic pit stop to take photos and to admire the aquatic remains of Tasmania's alluvial past of tin removal.

Little Blue Lake quickly develops into a popular pit stop at Tassie-RoadTrips. This is because the Little Blue Lake is easy to reach on the street towards the east coast and Mount William National Park.

We had seen photos of the Sees online and were convinced that we had to see him. Fortunately we came here early and had the space for ourselves.

Where is the Little Blue Lake in Tasmania?

Little Blue Lake is located in the South Mount Cameron region between Gladstone and Derby in northeastern Tasmania.

This great small place is next to its bigger brother, which has a unambiguous name; Blue Lake. However, the Little Blue Lake is probably "blue" and therefore in my opinion worth a photo stop.

Below I recorded the exact position of the Little Blue Lake so that you can find it easier.

How do I get here

The Little Blue Lake car park is easily accessible, just 20 meters from the paved Gladstone Road (B82). However, the parking lot to the viewpoint is not sealed, but is managed by every 2WD vehicle because it is literally located directly on the main street.

The lake is a perfect stop for those who drive to the east coast. Expect a ride of 1 hour and 50 minutes from Launceston. If you come west from Anson’s Bay, it is a shorter 30-minute drive.

Visit to the Little Blue Lake Tasmania

Before we arrived, we had seen photos of this incredible blue lake and were convinced that he was worth a visit to our Tasmanian van road trip. As soon as we left the main street, we saw the milky-turkey-colored water of the lake from the vantage point.

I would expect that most people would probably only have to spend about 10-15 minutes here in order to take their legs quickly. However, we probably spent well over an hour here, took pictures and admired the incredible blues.

Can you swim on the Little Blue Lake Tasmania?

Unfortunately, swimming on the Little Blue Lake is not recommended due to the toxic mineral waste that is left out of the era of tin removal.

Why is Little Blue Lake Blue?

Due to the high mineral content in the water, the lake is kept in a milky turquoise blue color all year round. These minerals were waste from alluvial tin breakdown, which ended shortly after the Second World War.

In fact, the lake itself is a hole dug from a mine. When the mining lease ended, the miners left the area and water soon filled the cavity and formed the Little Blue Lake Tasmania.
