Little Blue Lake is quickly becoming a popular pit stop on Tassie road trips. This is because Little Blue Lake is easily accessible on the road towards the East Coast and Mount William National Park.

We had seen photos of the lake online and were convinced we had to see it. Luckily we got here early and had the place all to ourselves.

Where is Little Blue Lake in Tasmania?

Little Blue Lake is located in the South Mount Cameron region between Gladstone and Derby in north-east Tasmania.

This great little place sits next to its bigger brother, which has an equally unique name; Blue lake. However, Little Blue Lake is probably “bluer” and therefore more worth a photo stop in my opinion.

Below I have recorded the exact location of Little Blue Lake to make it easier for you to find it.

How do I get here?

The Little Blue Lake car park is easily accessible, just 20 meters from the tarmacked Gladstone Road (B82). However, the car park to the viewpoint is not sealed but is accessible to any 2WD vehicle as it is literally right on the main road.

The lake is a perfect stopover for those heading to the East Coast. Expect a 1 hour and 50 minute drive from Launceston. If you’re coming west from Anson’s Bay, it’s a shorter 30-minute drive.

Visit to Little Blue Lake Tasmania

Before we arrived we had seen photos of this incredible blue lake and were convinced it was worth visiting on our Tasmanian van road trip. As soon as we got off the main road, we saw the milky turquoise waters of the lake from the viewpoint.

I would expect that most people would probably only need to spend about 10-15 minutes here to quickly stretch their legs. However, we probably spent well over an hour here taking pictures and admiring the incredible blues.

Can you swim at Little Blue Lake Tasmania?

Unfortunately, swimming at Little Blue Lake is not recommended due to the toxic mineral waste left over from the tin mining era.

Why is Little Blue Lake blue?

Due to the high mineral content in the water, the lake is a milky turquoise blue color all year round. These minerals were waste from years of alluvial tin mining that ended shortly after World War II.

In fact, the lake itself is a hole dug by humans from a mine. When the mining lease ended, the miners left the area and water soon filled the void, forming Little Blue Lake Tasmania.

Fantastic barn accommodation in Derby: Derby Digs Barn

Camping near Little Blue Lake

Although not currently listed on Campermate or other apps, you can find a small area a little further down from the viewing platform. You can camp here in a motorhome or caravan.

Although we didn't spend the night here, it definitely looked like a great place if you want to break up the drive.
