Biodiversity in tourism: EcoTrophea is looking for innovative projects!

The importance of biodiversity in tourism will become the focus of attention in 2025, especially through the sustainability award from the German Travel Association (DRV). Under the motto “Biodiversity in Tourism”, the Eco Trophea is being launched again to honor projects that are dedicated to promoting and preserving biodiversity. The application deadline for interested projects is August 28, 2025, and the award ceremony will take place on October 9 or 10 during the DRV Capital Congress in Berlin. This development is driven by Travel before 9 and that DRV equally emphasized.

The Eco Trophy, an international award, has been awarded since 1987 and recognizes projects that actively work to protect natural habitats and strengthen biodiversity. The DRV emphasizes that the loss of biodiversity is one of the greatest challenges of our time. On the one hand, tourism can have a negative impact on the environment, but it also offers enormous opportunities to act as a partner in protecting sensitive ecosystems.

Focus on practical solutions

Practical solutions are sought that contribute to the preservation or restoration of natural habitats. This includes sustainable visitor management in ecologically sensitive regions as well as the promotion of regional biodiversity in cooperation with local communities. Initiatives that sensitize and educate travelers about the importance of biodiversity are expressly desired.

Harald Zeiss, Chairman of the DRV Sustainability Committee, emphasizes the essential role of biological diversity for sustainable tourism development. It makes it clear that to protect biodiversity, practical projects and initiatives are required to counteract challenges such as environmental degradation, climate change and the loss of natural habitats.

Conditions of participation and application process

Companies, organizations and individuals who actively contribute to the preservation of biodiversity through their tourism commitment are eligible to participate. The submitted projects should be successfully implemented and transferable to other destinations or players in tourism.

Interested parties must submit their applications by August 28, 2025, although English-language submissions will also be accepted. All relevant information and the application form are available on the DRV website.
