The worst airports in Germany 2025: This is how Frankfurt-Hahn performs!

The 2025 airport ranking, published by Airhelp, has caused a stir by presenting the worst German airports with detailed ratings. Over 316,000 Google reviews were used for the analysis, with the criteria punctuality, customer satisfaction and dining and shopping options playing a central role. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport came in last with only 2.8 out of 5 possible stars.

The geographical location of Frankfurt-Hahn, which is over 120 kilometers from the Hessian metropolis, is particularly criticized. The five worst-rated airports in Germany are:

Place Airport Rating (stars)
1 Frankfurt Hahn 2.8
2 Berlin Brandenburg (BER) 3.2
3 Dortmund, Cologne-Bonn, Memmingen 3.5 each
4 Weeze, Hanover, Düsseldorf 3.6 each
5 Hamburg, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden 3.7 each

Below average ratings in major cities

Large airports such as Frankfurt and Stuttgart perform disappointingly in the rating and only achieve 3.9 stars. Delays, strikes, long waiting times and operational challenges are cited as reasons for the below-average ratings. These factors contribute to travelers being dissatisfied with their overall experience at the airport.

In contrast, smaller airports may present more encouraging results. Lübeck-Blankensee Airport dominates the table with a rating of 4.4 stars. The Münster-Osnabrück, Kassel-Calden and Rostock-Laage airports also perform well and each receive 4.3 stars. Nuremberg Airport, Paderborn-Lippstadt, Saarbrücken and Friedrichshafen received further excellent ratings of 4.2 stars.

International comparison and punctuality

In an international comparison, Frankfurt Airport ranks 222nd out of 239 airports worldwide. The leader is Hamad International Airport in Qatar, which was named “best airport in the world” with 8.52 points. Germany must therefore take a sobering position on the global airport scene. Punctuality is a decisive factor for the ratings at 60%, while cleanliness and passenger opinions each make up 20%.

The situation at German airports clearly shows that it is time for travelers to consider smaller, better-rated airports for a more stress-free start to their journey. Airhelp, which was founded in 2013 and is now the world market leader for air passenger rights, offers more comprehensive information. These findings highlight the challenges many travelers face and the differences that exist between large and small airports.
