Worst airports in Germany: Hahn Airport in last place!

The latest results of the airport ranking, published by the travel tech company AirHelp, show clear differences in the assessment of German airports. Hahn Airport takes last place with 2.8 out of 5 stars, making it the biggest example of disappointment for travelers in Germany. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) performed only slightly better, coming in second to last place with 3.2 stars, although it recorded a small improvement of 0.1 stars compared to the previous year. Overall, the ranking was created based on over 316,000 Google reviews, with more than 72,000 reviews recorded for Frankfurt am Main Airport alone. These reviews reflect, among other things, issues such as delays, strikes and long waiting times that have a major impact on travelers.

However, some airports performed better. Memmingen, Dortmund and Cologne/Bonn airports each receive 3.5 stars, while Düsseldorf, Hanover and Weeze are rated 3.6 stars. Hamburg and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden perform only slightly better and achieve 3.7 stars. Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart show a mediocre performance with 3.9 stars. It is noticeable that many larger international hubs do not perform as well as smaller airports.

The best airports in Germany

At the top of the ranking is Lübeck-Blankensee Airport, which is the best airport in Germany with 4.4 out of 5 stars. Second and third places are closely followed by Münster/Osnabrück, Kassel-Calden and Rostock-Laage, which each receive 4.3 stars. Other well-rated airports include Nuremberg, Paderborn-Lippstadt, Saarbrücken and Friedrichshafen, all of which achieve 4.2 stars. Leipzig/Halle and Erfurt-Weimar also do well with 4.1 stars each. Munich, Bremen and Dresden also achieve 4.0 stars.

The ranking shows that smaller airports are generally more positively received by passengers than the large international hubs. This observation is also supported by the results of the international ranking, in which Frankfurt Airport occupies a disappointing 222nd place out of a total of 239 airports evaluated.

International comparisons and punctuality

In an international comparison, Hamad International Airport in Qatar takes first place with a rating of 8.52 points. Cape Town International Airport and Chubu Airport in Japan follow, with 8.50 and 8.49 points. Punctuality in particular, which accounts for 60% of the points, is crucial for the overall rating. Here, the data shows that Japanese airports are heavily represented in the top ratings.

In Germany, however, Dortmund is ranked 32nd in the international rankings as the best airport, followed by Stuttgart and Düsseldorf. Helmut Schmidt Airport in Hamburg ranks fourth among German airports. In general, the rankings highlight challenges faced by many passengers while some airports strive to improve their operations.

The results of the AirHelp ranking are an indication of the performance of German airports and focus on passenger satisfaction and punctuality. Traveler perceptions play a crucial role in the assessment, but the various operational challenges must also be taken into account.
