British couple in Ibiza: arrested after 3,200 euros cruise charge!
A British couple have been arrested in Ibiza after attempting to flee a cruise without paying. They are accused of failing to pay a bill worth around €3,196, which is equivalent to around £2,685. The two holidaymakers, a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, hastily left the ship as they tried to escape with their luggage at around 3pm on May 21.
The crew members of the cruise ship immediately informed the police, who found the couple at the airport. When the two were arrested, the couple refused to pay the outstanding charges. As a result of this incident, the authorities are investigating suspected fraud.
Background and development of the incident
Such incidents are not uncommon in the cruise business. In the past there have been repeated scuffles and bizarre court hearings. The cruise industry has developed positively in recent years, recording growth of six percent in 2023 compared to 2019, with a total of around 31.5 million passengers worldwide. Forecasts suggest that there will be around 39.5 million ocean cruise passengers by 2027.
North America, especially the USA, is the most important market. Over seven million passengers traveled to Miami alone. Germany recorded 3.7 million cruise guests last year, including river trips. Hamburg and Kiel top the list of German cruise ports, with both cities recording over a million passengers each.
The cruise industry is changing
The largest cruise ship currently in operation is Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, which can accommodate 7,600 guests. The demand for luxury cruises is constantly growing, and companies such as AIDA and TUI Cruises are already working on climate-neutral propulsion systems to meet this demand.
However, the incident in Ibiza shows that not all travelers are willing to fulfill their obligations. It remains to be seen how the legal consequences will develop for the couple.
