Cannes is pulling the ripcord: only one cruise ship per day!
The southern French coastal city of Cannes has decided to drastically restrict the docking of large cruise ships. Loud RTL From 2026, only one cruise ship per day that can carry more than 3,000 passengers will be allowed in the Bay of Cannes. This measure is part of a broader plan to combat overtourism in Cannes while emphasizing the protection of the bay as an ecological treasure.
In 2026, only a maximum of 34 such large ships will be allowed to dock, while in the following year 2027 the number will be reduced to just 31 ships. In total, the city will not allow more than 6,000 cruise guests per day. Mayor David Lisnard emphasizes that the changes are necessary to protect the environment and promote a more sustainable form of tourism.
Focus on environmentally friendly ships
Cannes plans long-term measures to reduce visitor numbers. From 2030 onwards, only ships with a maximum of 1,300 passengers will be allowed to dock. The focus is on smaller, more modern and more environmentally friendly passenger ships that have less impact on local infrastructure and the environment.
In the past, 175 passenger ships anchored in Cannes Bay every year, bringing around 460,000 tourists to the city. These large cruise ships do not dock directly on the beaches, but rather anchor in the bay, with passengers being brought ashore using smaller handlebars.
measures in the region
In addition to the measures in Cannes, the nearby city of Nice has also announced that it will take measures to combat overtourism. From this summer, only ships carrying up to 900 passengers will be allowed to dock in Nice, reinforcing the trend towards more environmentally conscious tourism. These regulations show a growing sensitivity to the ecological impacts of cruise tourism and the need to make the tourism infrastructure sustainable.
The new regulation in Cannes comes into force through a contract with the company responsible for the small port. This will set the city's course in a new direction, towards a more responsible and environmentally friendly tourism strategy Mirror reported.
