A new book celebrates the legendary and oldest German-speaking comic heroes, the Digedags. Under the titleFrom the Orient to the Nucleonhonors the fascinating story of these characters, brought to life 100 years ago by Johannes Hegenbarth. The publication takes place on the occasion of the inventor's 100th birthday, which would have been celebrated on May 16, 2025. The illustrated book describes the Digedags' travel routes over a period of around 20 years.

The Digedags have been in the comic series since 1964Mosaicactive and began their journey with the “Ritter Runkel” series, which appeared in 63 issues from May 1964 to June 1969. Her first adventure in Venice took place in 1284 and took her through the Kingdom of Serbia, the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople and Asia Minor. When creating Digedags, Johannes Hegenbarth's goal was to create a non-violent, knowledge-transferring picture story for children.

An important contribution to comic culture

The adventures of the Digedags are set within a broad historical framework, ranging between the 3rd century BC and the 19th century and even extending into the future. The illustrated book not only contains maps and scenes from the original mosaic booklets, but also historical classifications that give readers a comprehensive understanding of the journeys depicted.

Comics expert Mathias Heller will present further works in the book that underline the importance of the Digedags and their adventures. The connection to Ernst Kahl, a multi-talented comic artist who recently died at the age of 76, is also highlighted in this context.
