DRK tour starts: Discover Baumkuchen and history in Salzwedel!
On September 1, 2025, a tour group from the German Red Cross (DRK) set off on an exciting tour through the Wendland and the Lüneburg Heath. The group traveled via the charming town of Salzwedel, which is known for its centuries-old tradition and its special Baumkuchen.
In Salzwedel, a district town in the Altmark that is over 750 years old, the DRK group was able to visit the first Salzwedel tree cake factory. The Baumkuchen is baked here in an impressive way over an open flame and has been a specialty of the region for 150 years. The production is like a small work of art: The dough is applied in layers and then baked at around 300 degrees. Visitors were even able to enjoy a tasting of the famous pastries as part of this special experience.
Bakery tradition and city history
Salzwedel is not only known for its Baumkuchen, but also for its impressive half-timbered architecture and the North German brick Gothic style. Imposing church ensembles characterize the cityscape and make the city a popular destination for tourists. In addition to the Baumkuchen bakery, Salzwedel has a lot to offer, including numerous small shops, cafés, pubs and two museums.
The city tour, which covers topics such as Hanseatic, half-timbered and Romanesque, offers interested groups an informative opportunity to find out more about the history of the city. These tours last around 1 to 2 hours and cost €38 for groups of up to 12 people, while groups of 13 or more only have to pay €3 per person.
Visit to the Baumkuchen factory
Particularly noteworthy is the opportunity for visitors to visit the bakery in Salzwedel's first Baumkuchen factory. Anyone interested can watch the baking show on weekdays from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The 1-hour tour includes a free Baumkuchen tasting. For groups of up to 50 people, prior registration is required by calling 03901 / 32306.
In summary, the DRK's journey not only shows the tasty side of Salzwedel, but also how closely the tradition of Baumkuchen is interwoven with the history and culture of the city. Anyone in the region should not miss the opportunity to taste the unique Baumkuchen and discover the beauty of Salzwedel.
