Einbeck celebrates Blaudruck: Exclusive tour for UNESCO World Heritage Day!

Einbeck is preparing for a special occasion: the 20th UNESCO World Heritage Day will be celebrated on June 1, 2025. As part of this festive event, Einbeck Tourismus is offering an additional public blue print tour, which will take place on June 2nd at 2:30 p.m. This special tour honors the intangible cultural heritage of Einbeck blueprinting and offers participants a unique opportunity to learn more about this traditional technique.

Blue printing is a centuries-old method of fabric finishing that is now one of the rarest crafts. There are only twelve companies in Germany that practice this technology, which underlines the importance and urgency of its preservation. This is also the reason why UNESCO included the blueprint in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, like Conference of Ministers of Education reported. Blue printing was brought to Europe in the 17th century by the Dutch East India Company and enjoyed great popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries before being pushed into the background by industrial mass production.

Insights on the blue print tour

The upcoming tour is part of the regular tours of the old town and offers participants exciting insights into the technology of blueprinting and its cultural significance. During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to print a fabric bag using the traditional process. This interactive part of the tour is not only intended to be entertaining, but also to promote understanding of the craft heritage.

The event represents an important step in raising awareness of blueprint and honoring its cultural value. “Blue printing connects cultures and generations,” emphasizes Helmut Holter, President of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs. The companies find support through an initiative that brings together young designers and traditional crafts.

Reservation and information

For those interested, further information and the option to make reservations are available online on the Einbeck Tourismus website. The Einbeck Tourist Information can also be reached by telephone on 05561/ 916 555 or by email. The aim of such events is to keep the specific knowledge about blueprinting and the associated traditions alive and to pass it on to future generations.

The importance of blue printing lies not only in preserving a unique craft, but also in promoting international exchange in crafts, which is emphasized by Michelle Müntefering, Minister of State for International Cultural Policy. It is also hoped that through UNESCO recognition, more attention will be drawn to this unique art technique applied to linen, cotton or silk, thus contributing to the diversity of our cultural identity.

Be there when it means: “Experience and understand blue printing” – an event that combines history, art and craftsmanship.
