Discover the wonders of the body: Long Night of Science in Erlangen!

The “Long Night of Sciences” will take place on October 25, 2025 at the Erlangen University Hospital. The event will be organized by the German Center for Immunotherapy and the Comprehensive Cancer Center Erlangen-EMN from 5 p.m. to midnight. Visitors can look forward to an exciting program that offers a variety of activities and information opportunities about immune medicine and cancer.

The highlights include the presentation of giant organ models, lectures by experts and discussion groups in which visitors can ask questions and discuss. Tours of medical facilities are also offered, as well as special Pecha Kucha presentations in which 20 slides are presented in 20 seconds each.

Diverse supporting program

A “tandem talk” about the gut-brain axis will also be part of the program, looking at current research in this area. The offer is complemented by a quiz, a raffle and an entertaining molecular cooking show. Food trucks ensure your physical well-being with a variety of dishes that offer something for every taste.

Participation in the event is subject to a fee. Admission prices are 20.00 euros for regular tickets and 12.00 euros for reduced tickets. Tickets are available at advance booking offices, at the box office and also online as “print@home” tickets. Prior registration is required for the free guided tours.

Research on the microbiota-gut-brain axis

The event will also discuss interesting research work on topics such as the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Studies show that acute psychological stress increases paracellular permeability and modulates immune activity in the rectal mucosa of healthy volunteers, as Gerdin et al. (2023) made clear in their publication. These findings are particularly relevant when it comes to understanding the interaction of mental and physical health factors.

Research by Doifode et al. (2021) investigate the influence of the microbiota-gut-brain axis on the pathophysiology of diseases such as Alzheimer's. Such multispectral approaches are crucial to unraveling the connections between the nervous system and digestion.

In addition, further studies, namely those by Benson et al. (2019) and Creekmore et al. (2018) how emotional stress influences pain sensitivity and is related to intestinal barrier dysfunction. In this context, the relevance of interdisciplinary research, which brings together more and more aspects of the health sciences, becomes increasingly clear.

For further information about the event, those interested can contact the DZI office on 09131 85-40333 or by email at ange-nacht(at)uk-erlangen.de. More details about the event can also be found on the Erlangen University Hospital website, which provides further exciting insights into current research and development.

The Long Night of Science promises to not only be entertaining, but also offer educational insights into the fascinating world of medical research.
