Hinagdanan Cave is a site I definitely didn’t expect to see in Bohol. Crawling down the narrow entrance you enter a huge, naturally lit underground cave with a turquoise lagoon. Hinagdanan Cave is a site I definitely didn’t expect to see in Bohol. Crawling down the narrow entrance you enter a huge, naturally lit underground cave with a turquoise lagoon.

It's certainly a pretty epic cave. However, when I left it was a little crowded which didn't add to the ambience.

What is Hinagdanan Cave?

Hinagdanan means “ladder-shaped” cave. The story goes that the cave was accidentally discovered by a farmer while clearing his land. The farmer then built a ladder through the hole so the village could enjoy the cool water below. There is much debate as to when this happened, but it is said that the villagers used the cave to hide from the invasion of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.

Cave details

Hinagdanan Cave is a 100m wide cave with large limestone formations. There are several large stalagmites and stalactites that cast impressive shadows when illuminated from the holes above.

The entrance to the cave is very narrow and short. However, it won't be long before the cave opens to reveal a large cavern. From here you can see the epic blue fresh water.

Is the cave a tourist trap?

While I was definitely impressed by the beauty of Hinagdanan Cave, I personally found it to be a bit too crowded. As soon as you enter, you notice how much industry has accumulated around the attraction. There are stalls, vendors and even a ticket office to see the cave.

While I appreciate that the locals rightly profit from their natural wonders, I'm not sure I would visit this place again. The cave was narrow and full of people swimming with life jackets. This made it difficult to even move around, let alone explore.

If you decide to visit Hinagdanan Cave, I hope you have a better experience than I did.

Entrance fee to Hinagdanan Cave

The entrance fee to Hinagdanan Cave is 25 pesos per person. However, if you want to swim in the azure waters, you have to pay 100 pesos extra. I decided to visit the cave without purchasing a swimming ticket.

Since the cave is on private property, all money goes to the owner. Considering how popular the site has become, I bet she's pretty happy with her ancestor's discovery.

All in all, Hinagdanan Cave is certainly an impressive grotto with a unique history. If you're in the area and have 30 minutes and 25 pesos to spare, definitely check it out. However, if you're looking for a quiet place to relax and explore, I'd probably suggest skipping this one.
