Florists in constant stress: IG Bau demands better working conditions!
In the Duchy of Lauenburg, over 60 employees work in the floristry industry, with the majority of women being carried out by women. These florists are responsible for binding flower bouquets, wreaths, arrangements and bridal jewelry. In addition, you decorate shop windows, sales rooms and hotel foyers, which requires a considerable manual skill, know-how and a conscientious price calculation. Achim Bartels from IG Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt describes the job as hard and demands reforms in the industry.
The working conditions are particularly challenging for many florists. Many of them work six days a week and have only 24 days of vacation a year. IG Bau Hamburg is committed to reforming working hours, wishing a five-day week and 32 days of annual vacation. It is also required that overtime is appropriately remunerated. The union is already planning negotiations with the Association of German Florists (FDF) on a new collective agreement to improve working conditions.
collective bargaining and wage increases
An important step in improving the conditions was recently achieved by a tariff degree. The hourly wages should rise in two steps. Retrospectively as of July 1, 2024, there will be an increase for pay group A3 of 5 %, while the groups A4 and A5 increase by 6 %. Further adjustments are planned on July 1, 2025, including a 4.75 % increase in the higher wage groups and 2.5 % in the lower groups. However, these new wages only apply to unionized employees.
In addition, the trainee remuneration increases in two steps by 50 euros each. The trainees receive 900 euros in the first year, 1000 euros in the second year and 1100 euros in the third year. This represents an incentive for young people in the industry and could help increase appreciation for the profession.
importance of the profession and outlook
florists play a crucial role in large life events such as baptisms, weddings and funerals. Your manual skill and creativity are valued by society and are indispensable. The challenges with which the industry is confronted require a comprehensive reform to improve working conditions and to gain and maintain qualified specialists. The planned collective bargaining and the new wage increases show that the industry can move in a positive direction.
