Frankfurt Airport: Passenger numbers are increasing despite global uncertainties!
Current passenger numbers at Frankfurt Airport show a continued upward trend, despite global tensions that could affect air traffic. In April 2025, the airport recorded a 4.8 percent increase in passenger numbers compared to the same month last year and counted a total of 5.34 million passengers. This is particularly due to the late Easter holidays, as Fraport AG reports. In the first four months of 2025, the total number of passengers totaled 17.76 million, an increase of 0.7 percent compared to the same period last year. Nevertheless, the numbers only reach 85.2 percent of the passenger volume from 2019, the year before the corona pandemic, reports fnp.de.
April 2025 was particularly notable as a new daily high of 198,000 passengers was recorded on April 11th. While European air traffic increased by 6.8 percent this month, there were 3.3 percent more travelers on domestic flights to and from Frankfurt compared to the previous year. On the other hand, demand for flights to North America fell by 1.9 percent, and passenger numbers to South Africa also fell by 0.5 percent, which could be partly due to the violent clashes in the country.
Historical reviews
However, at the end of 2021, passenger numbers showed a return to the uncertainties caused by a new coronavirus variant. In December 2021, passenger volume rose sharply and amounted to around 2.7 million passengers, which represents an increase of 204.6 percent compared to the same month last year. Nevertheless, the volume remained 44.2 percent lower compared to December 2019.
The future of air transport
Dr. Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG, expressed uncertainty regarding future developments, but assumes that demand could pick up from spring 2022. Looking at the latest data from 2025, it is already clear that, despite all the challenges, Frankfurt Airport is still on the right track as one of the largest international hubs in Germany.
With a steady increase in passenger numbers, the airport's resilience is demonstrated, while at the same time outdated issues must be taken into account to promote recovery on the path to normality.
