Fresh catch and tradition: The best fish markets on the Côte Bleue

The fish market in Carro is a popular destination for fish lovers on the Côte Bleue. The small port in the Bouches-du-Rhône department has a long tradition of fishing. Fishermen bring their fresh catch into the harbor every day, including sea bass, sea bream, sea bream, tuna and rockfish, which are used in the traditional bouillabaisse. This market takes place every morning from 8:30 a.m. all year round and offers an authentic atmosphere for visitors.

Another popular fish market is La Criée in the Old Port of Marseille. A city institution, this market offers an impressive selection of seafood including whiting, red mullet, rockfish and sardines. The stalls are open daily from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the star restaurant “Une table au Sud” also gets its fish directly from this market. The friendly atmosphere and local accent make La Criée a unique experience in Marseille.

Other fish markets in the region

In La Ciotat, visitors can also enjoy fresh fish. The market in the Old Port offers specialties such as sardines, sole and monkfish. With a storied past of fishing and trading, La Ciotat daily attracts fish lovers who appreciate the locally caught seafood.

In addition to the fish markets, the Bouches-du-Rhône region offers a variety of other markets known for their local products. For example, the Marché d’Arles takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, features over 200 exhibitors and includes a wide range of fruits, vegetables and Camargue rice. The atmosphere is inspired by Van Gogh and attracts many art lovers.

The Marché de Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, which opens its stalls on Wednesday mornings, also attracts many visitors with around 60 stalls and a range of fresh products and local specialties. The Provençal atmosphere and the charming fashion and decorative items make this market particularly attractive.

The various markets in the Bouches-du-Rhône offer not only a wide range of local products, but also a unique cultural experience in Provence. While fish markets such as those in Carro, Marseille and La Ciotat attract fresh seafood, the other markets offer a wide range of regional delicacies and artisan products. Visitors can embark on a culinary journey of discovery and experience the region's rich gastronomic culture up close.
