Cross-border mobility: Progress celebrated in Freyung

The first specialist conference on the topic of “Regional mobility and tourism in the border area of Lower Bavaria-South Bohemia-Pilsen” took place in Freyung on the occasion of an important step in cross-border cooperation. Around 60 participants from 34 different organizations came together to discuss progress in mobility and tourism. Those present were recruited from the districts of South Bohemia and Pilsen as well as the districts of Cham, Freyung-Grafenau, Passau, Regen and Straubing-Bogen.

Representatives from transport companies, associations and communities were also present and contributed their perspectives and experiences to the discussions. The conference, like pnp.de reported, served primarily to present the current status of the projects and to develop new ideas. The participants benefited from specialist presentations and working groups that focused on the challenges and opportunities of cross-border cooperation.

Structural weakness and development potential

The border area in Bavaria, which is considered structurally weak compared to other regions, faces a variety of challenges, especially in rural areas. A central concern is the expansion of Bavarian-Czech cooperation, which is seen as an important instrument for strengthening the border area. Innovative ideas and the commitment of local actors, coupled with cross-border projects, are crucial for the positive development of this region.

A supporting measure is the funding guideline for the Bavarian-Czech border area (BYCZFöR), which is in accordance with stmfh.bayern.de was introduced. This guideline promotes forward-looking projects in rural areas of the administrative regions of Lower Bavaria, Upper Palatinate and Upper Franconia, whereby a cross-border component is absolutely necessary. Projects must treat at least two subject areas, such as demography, culture, mobility and tourism, with equal priority in order to be eligible to apply.

Funding opportunities and areas of action

The maximum funding amount is 100,000 euros per project year with an approval period of up to four years. For first-time funding, the basic funding rate is up to 70%. In areas with a particular need for action, this funding rate can even be increased by up to 15%. In addition, projects that are inter-municipal or have financial participation from the Czech side receive additional funding.

Funding details amount
Maximum funding amount per project year 100,000 euros
Basic funding rate (first-time funding) up to 70%

The application requires contacting the responsible Department 52 in the State Ministry of Finance and Homeland, whereby the application must be submitted in duplicate at least four weeks before the start of the project. Since 2016, over 30 cross-border projects have been funded, 24 of which have been successfully completed. These initiatives are a step in the right direction to address the serious challenges in the border area.
