Home holidays are booming: Germany's coasts and mountains in the travel focus!
German travelers show a strong interest in vacationing at home. The Hotel Association of Germany (IHA) has found that bookings on German coasts and in the mountains are increasing. IHA managing director Tobias Warnecke confirms that the pandemic has contributed to many Germans rediscovering their homeland. Campsites and holiday apartments have particularly benefited during this time and continue to enjoy great popularity.
In addition, attention is drawn to the trend that rising temperatures and record summers in Europe are tempting holidaymakers to move away from the overcrowded Mediterranean to cooler regions. Warnecke predicts a significant shift in travel destinations towards the coastal regions of Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. More and more people are choosing to vacation within their own country, partly in response to the high cost of air travel and the shrinking carbon footprint of terrestrial travel.
Popular travel destinations and planning
A look at the statistical data shows that over 75% of guests in German hotels are nationals. Despite a forecast of zero growth in the German economy, the tourism industry is optimistic for the coming summer season. According to IHA, 40% of Germans have already booked their summer vacation, while many are still undecided. Organizers are also increasingly offering last-minute offers for package holidays.
The rising prices for trips abroad, especially in Turkey, and the expected record numbers for Mallorca are also contributing to the decision to vacation in Germany. The most popular travel destinations in Germany are still the North and Baltic Seas, Bavaria, the Lake Constance region and the Black Forest. The low mountain ranges are also becoming increasingly popular.
Holiday behavior is changing
A deeper analysis of Germans' vacation behavior by the Research Association for Vacation and Travel (FUR) shows that vacation trips are the second most important consumption priority for Germans, only after spending on food. The majority of respondents plan to spend the same amount on vacation in 2024 as they did last year, while 17% are willing to spend more. Tragically, 43% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with high holiday prices.
Important holiday motives for 2025 are, above all, summer and warmth, distance from everyday life, fun, relaxation and nature experiences. A significant proportion of Germans still prefer to travel abroad; 76% of holiday trips in 2023 were abroad, with Spain remaining the most popular destination.
The decline in air travel in 2023 shows that many travelers are increasingly using cars or motorhomes. Nevertheless, hotels remain the preferred accommodation, while only one in four stays in a holiday home or holiday apartment. Package holidays continue to be in high demand as they offer travelers comfort and safety.
Overall, developments in the German tourism landscape show that the industry remains optimistic about the future, despite the challenges associated with rising prices and changing travel behavior. The focus on sustainability and the search for inexpensive offers will be of great importance for many travelers in the coming years.
