In Luther's footsteps: New information point inaugurated in Bad Vilbel!
On May 13, 2025, an information sign was inaugurated along the Luther Trail on the Heilsberg in Bad Vilbel. Representatives of the city, the Heilsberg local council and the Lutherweg Association in Hesse were present at the inauguration, as were many local pilgrims. The sign provides information about the history of the Luther Trail and its connection to the city of Bad Vilbel. It aims to highlight Bad Vilbel as an important stopover for pilgrims and hikers and to promote tourism in the region. Claus-Günther Kunzmann, head of the culture department, emphasized the importance of hiking and themed trails for tourism.
The Luther Trail, which runs for around 400 kilometers and traces the footsteps of Martin Luther, is an important pilgrimage route. It stretches from the Wartburg near Eisenach in Thuringia to the Lutherstadt Worms in Rhineland-Palatinate. In Hesse, the Lutherweg includes the main route of around 320 kilometers and 40 kilometers of access routes. Historical places and picturesque landscapes make the route a unique experience for hikers and pilgrims. The routes are accessible as an interactive map, and GPX files for the entire route as well as for the individual stages make planning easier.
Information and meaning of the Luther Way
The information sign on the Heilsberg also offers deeper insights into the origins and development of this historical settlement, supported by a selection of historical photographs. The information boards along the Luther Trail are not only informative, but also a means of promoting the cultural heritage of the Reformation in the region. Cities such as Gießen, Bad Hersfeld and Frankfurt thus have the opportunity to position themselves as starting points for pilgrims and hikers.
The pilgrimage route from Wartburg to Worms, also known as the West Route, has a total length of 363 kilometers and includes 18 stages. The eastern route, which leads from Worms to Wartburg, measures 356 kilometers and also includes 18 stages. On May 6, 2023, the Thuringian loop of the Luther Trail 1521 was inaugurated, depicting Luther's route from Möhra to Wartburg. Important distance information and route routes are available in tables for the two main sections of the Luther Trail.
The Luther Trail not only combines spiritual and cultural elements, but also plays an important role in the tourism development of the Bad Vilbel region and beyond. The city and its surroundings are ready to honor the rich heritage of the Reformation and present themselves as an attractive destination for hikers and history buffs.
