Historic Antalya Tram: A ride through the old town!

The tram in Antalya, which represents a significant part of the city's public transport, combines historical and modern transport options. The oldest tram, which was built in Nuremberg in 1962, is a gift from the twin city and has been in operation in Antalya since 1999. This old tram has a route of 4.4 km and circles the charming historical center of Kaleici while serving stops such as Karaalioglu City Park, Hadrian's Gate and Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower). The fare is just a few Turkish lira or can be purchased via an electronic day ticket, making it a cost-effective transportation alternative in the city of about 2.3 million people. A journey takes around 30 minutes and ends at the cultural history museum, where visitors get a comprehensive insight into the history of the region.

The Antalya tram, also known as AntRay, was opened as a modern extension in 2009 and is now an important part of local public transport. This modern tram stretches a total length of 46.1 km and serves several lines. The historic tram, on the other hand, remains present with just one line and represents a piece of the city's transport and cultural history. AntRay is operated by the company Antalya Ulaşım A.Ş.

Integration of historical and modern elements

The old tram is not only a means of transportation, but also a popular tourist attraction, giving visitors access to many attractions in the Old Town. The stops include significant points that showcase both the local culture and historical elements of Antalya. On the other hand, the AntRay offers more efficient and faster transport with a frequency of 12 to 17 minutes during rush hour.

As of April 2024, the historic tram runs every 30 minutes and is currently operated by six vehicles, while the AntRay has a modern fleet with a total of 34 vehicles. This includes, among other things, 14 Urbos 2 from CAF and 18 vehicles from Eurotem.

Expansion plans and future of trams

The opening of the first section of the modern tram was in December 2009 and expansion has continued since then. Another step in the right direction was taken with the opening of a new line to the airport and EXPO 2016. Test runs for an extension covering 15.4 km began in April 2016. This new route will also partially include the airport stops.

A future plan also calls for the connection of the T3 with the historic tram and the construction of a third light rail line that will connect Konyaalti and Yesilirmak. Transport connections in Antalya are constantly developing, contributing to improving the quality of life of residents and a more pleasant experience for visitors to this fascinating city.
