Kirchheimer group celebrates friendship in Rambouillet: An unforgettable weekend!
On the long Ascension weekend, a group of around 40 participants traveled to Rambouillet, Kirchheim's French twin town. For many of them it was the first opportunity to visit this charming city. The German-French friendship was warmly celebrated by the French hosts at a champagne reception.
The guests were accommodated in host families, which further promoted the exchange and getting to know the cultures. Friday was dedicated to a special topic: the Franco-German encounter and European history. The participants took a joint trip to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, where they visited the inland navigation museum and took a tour of the historic town.
Special visit and European history
One of the most emotional moments of the trip was the visit to Jean Monnet's home in Bazoches-sur-Guyonne. Monnet, an important French politician, had always supported European unification and his vision of a united Europe is still relevant today. His work significantly influenced the Schuman Plan, which envisaged the pooling of coal and steel production between France and Germany. These measures aimed to prevent future wars by encouraging economic cooperation. Monnet's importance today is undisputed, as he recognized the urgent need for European unification at a time of international tension.
The festive dinner on Saturday evening at the Relais d’Anje near Mesnil offered the participants the opportunity to deepen their new friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. Many people used the following Saturday for individual excursions or activities with their host families to find out more about life in France.
On Sunday evening the group from Kirchheim returned home satisfied and enriched. The memories of the weekend in Rambouillet will be fondly remembered by all participants and will help strengthen German-French relations.
The initiative for these meetings reflects the vision of Jean Monnet and the urgency of European unification that he expressed many years ago. The Schuman Declaration, issued on May 9, 1950 and inspired by Monnet, remains to this day a fundamental milestone in the history of the European Union and its efforts towards peace and cooperation.
