Kitchen secrets and history: The Krone in Raderach is celebrating 50 years!

On February 1, 1975, Helga and Christian Siefert opened the Hotel Restaurant Krone in the small district of Raderach in Friedrichshafen. This was first mentioned in documents in 1140 as “Radirai” and is the smallest district of Friedrichshafen with around 400 inhabitants, located about 6 kilometers northwest of the city center. Despite the initial skepticism about women running the restaurant, especially after the untimely death of Christian Siefert on November 25, 1997, Helga and her daughters Alexandra and Marion continued to run the restaurant successfully. The latter runs the kitchen and has revamped the menu with popular dishes such as homemade croquettes and ice cream dumplings. Today Alexandra and Jürgen Schrandt are at the helm of the company.

The Siefert family ran the restaurant seven days a week and soon found themselves surrounded by bets that predicted the length of their successful management. Despite initial challenges, the restaurant has established itself as a popular destination. Extensions were made in 1999, which included an adjoining room, a terrace and additional guest rooms. This helped to improve the property's offerings and accommodate more guests.

Historical context and building history

A fascination for history surrounds the Gasthaus Krone, whose name comes from a long tradition. The Krone garden restaurant is now located on the site of the demolished castle that once stood on Weiherberg. The remains of this ancient fortification, used by a noble family in the 12th century, come from a castle that was demolished in 1836. The stones from the demolished castle were used to build the Krone inn and other buildings, underlining the historical connection between the past and the present.

The inn itself houses a historic well in the basement that once supplied the castle with water. Over 60 meters deep, it shows the engineering skills of the time. Raderach, also known as Oberraderach to distinguish it from Unterraderach, was owned by Salem Monastery in the 13th century and thereafter under various ruling regimes, which has further enriched the local history.
