SailGP inspires in Sassnitz: historic premiere for Germany!

The enthusiasm for sailing is noticeable in Germany: on August 16, 2025, the premiere of the international racing series SailGP took place in Sassnitz. This event is not only a spectacular sporting event, but also a long-term perspective for Germany as a location. The league officials and Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig confirmed that the SailGP will be held in Germany at least until 2027. This represents an important milestone for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In an exciting first race, Erik Heil and his team triumphed in front of 6,000 spectators. The German SailGP Team, founded by Thomas Riedel and Sebastian Vettel, plays a crucial role in establishing this new sport in Germany. After the first day of racing, the German team took fourth place in the overall standings and is looking forward to the upcoming races, scheduled for August 22nd and 23rd, 2026.

Technological innovations and records

In addition to the impressive sporting achievements, news about speed records caused a stir. A Danish team pushed their yacht to a breathtaking speed of 103.93 km/h, which is considered a new record within the series. Russell Coutts, CEO of SailGP, emphasized the importance of the German market and the opportunity to develop a sustainable fan base for sailing here.

Despite the positive aspects, there were also some technical challenges. During a race there was a collision between the US team and Team Emirates GBR. This resulted in significant damage to the boats, but Dylan Fletcher from the British team remains optimistic and expressed his wish to return to the water soon despite the damage.

The role of SailGP and the future of sailing

The introduction of SailGP in Germany shows how international interest and local developments can work together harmoniously. Prime Minister Schwesig described the confirmation as a step in the right direction, both for the sports community and for the regional economy. With the establishment of the league in Germany, a lasting interest in sailing will be promoted, which may also integrate younger generations into the sport.

Through future events and the opportunity for spectators to be part of this exciting sailing sport, Germany could become one of the central players in the international sailing world. The combination of high-performance yachts, dedicated teams and government support paves the way for a promising future.
