Tourism in MV: Overnight stays are increasing! Satisfaction remains high!
The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Tourism Association draws a positive interim conclusion for the first half of 2025. The region recorded an increase in overnight stays to 13.2 million, an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the previous year. At the same time, around 3.5 million guests came in the first six months, which represents an increase of 2.6 percent. This prompted Economics Minister Wolfgang Blank to rate the increase in overnight stays as being above the national average.
The Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast remains the most popular holiday region, followed by Rügen/Hiddensee and Usedom. June 2025 was particularly positive with 974,000 guest arrivals - an increase of 8.7 percent compared to the previous year. However, June 2025 is down 7.2 percent compared to the numbers from 2019, a year with particularly high demand.
satisfaction and challenges
53 percent of the companies surveyed rated the peak season as satisfactory or very satisfactory. Despite the positive overall development, there are also challenges in the industry. The industry association DEHOGA points out the uncertain economic situation, characterized by rising prices and guests' reluctance to consume.
The weather conditions were not always optimal this year, which affected the length of stay of guests in June. This was 4.0 nights, which represents a slight decrease compared to 4.2 nights in the previous year. The occupancy rate of sleeping accommodation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was 41.4 percent in June 2025, which is below the German average of 43.0 percent but above the 2024 level (40.2 percent).
Economic impact
Despite these challenges, the tourism sector remains a significant source of income for the region. It generates sales of around seven billion euros annually and employs around 120,000 people. The first six months of this year show that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with 3.5 million guest arrivals, continues to occupy fifth place in the federal state ranking behind Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Bremen and Hamburg.
Nevertheless, guest arrivals over the course of the year currently remain below the level of 2019, where 147,000 fewer arrivals were recorded. Looking at the overall development, it can be seen that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania achieved the second-best result with 13.21 million overnight stays over the course of the year, but is still 343,000 overnight stays behind the record year of 2019.
Overall, the tourist situation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows how important a continuous dialogue between providers and politicians is in order to strengthen the industry even in uncertain times. The administrative and economic measures could help to better deal with future challenges.
