Mekaki Beach Lombok – Epic hidden gem in Lombok

Mekaki Beach is a long and wide white sand beach on the south coast of Lombok. Although it takes a little time to get here, Mekaki Beach (Pentai Mekaki) is worth a day trip to one of Lombok's best hidden gems.

How to get to Mekaki Beach?

Mekaki Beach is a bit off the beaten track of Lombok's regular tourist crowds. To get here I would recommend staying in Sekotong. This way you'll explore what I think is one of the best adventure regions in Lombok.

From Sekotong Port it is just a short 30 minute scooter ride over the mountains on a good paved road to reach Mekaki Beach. From Pelangan Gili Gede Port on the main road to Sekotong, turn left onto a road known as “Mekaki Road” and follow it all the way up the hill. Once you reach the top, you'll have breathtaking views of Mekaki Bay and far out to the Indian Ocean. From here, you'll slowly slide down the hill until you reach the white sands of Mekaki Beach.

Rental price Sekotong scooter: 50,000 – 70,000 rupees per day

For those staying in Kuta Lombok, it is a much longer drive to reach Mekaki Beach, taking up to 2 hours.

What to Expect at Mekaki Beach Lombok

Mekaki Beach is completely undeveloped and a true insider tip on the coast! The sand stretches around the bay and ends at a jagged cliff line. We spent hours exploring the beach, walking from one end to the other and swimming in the clear, turquoise water.

Just be warned that the currents are said to get quite strong here. Make sure you are a confident swimmer before entering the water on days with strong waves.

Mekaki Beach is also considered a solid surfing beach. Just offshore you'll find a decent sand quarry where you'll stop your scooter. There is also a rocky reef that appears to be in the middle of the bay. A little further down from this point, the waves tend to become shore dumpers, crashing onto the thick, deep-sinking sand. This is perfect for bodysurfing.

Brand new mountain road!

On the way back from the beach, I highly recommend taking the brand new mountain road that goes all the way around the south coast of Sekotong and back north.

After reaching the top of the hill, you can turn right instead of heading straight down to Pelangan. This paved road is one of the best roads in Lombok and offers some incredible opportunities to stop and photograph some gems of viewpoints!

Because this reign is somewhat hidden. To save money on transportation, I would recommend staying a few nights in this largely unexplored part of Lombok, Indonesia to see the best things to do. Here are my top tips for budget accommodation.
