NATO summit in The Hague: Massive traffic restrictions are imminent!
From June 22 to 26, 2025, The Hague will be significantly impacted due to the upcoming NATO summit. Around 45 heads of state and government as well as a large number of delegation members and journalists, including US President Donald Trump, are expected to attend on the days of the summit, June 24th and 25th. These extensive preparations not only affect traffic, but also safety in the affected regions such as Scheveningen, Katwijk aan Zee and Haarlemmermeer. The Dutch government already passed extensive emergency regulations on Wednesday evening to ensure security at the summit. This marks one of the largest security operations in The Hague's history.
The security and traffic precautions come into force on June 22nd. From this date there will be closures and diversions on the A4, A5 and A44 motorways. The authorities expect high traffic volumes and longer travel times between the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. In addition, public transport is affected by overcrowding and possible failures. Residents are urged to stay home during peak hours and use alternative transportation. These measures not only affect road traffic, but also access to various areas within The Hague.
Traffic restrictions and security measures
In some cases, several regions in The Hague are completely closed. The affected locations include the World Forum, the Haagse Bos, the Zeestraat and a section of the coast. The core area of the closures is the World Forum in Scheveningen, which will be completely closed from June 19th at 11:59 p.m. until June 25th at 8:00 p.m. Access is reserved exclusively for accredited persons, including heads of state and government. Residents need special permits to gain access.
Particular attention is paid to strict controls in access areas. From June 22nd, vehicles and bicycles will be prohibited in these zones and public transport will be rerouted. Restaurants and retail outlets in the immediate area will also have to close or operate with restrictions during the peak, meaning residents will effectively experience five days of isolation.
Maritime exclusion zones and beach activities
Maritime exclusion zones apply on the coast of Scheveningen between June 19th and 25th. Motorized boats are prohibited during this time, although the beach remains fully accessible to bathers. Activities such as swimming, paddling and surfing are permitted up to 500 meters from the coast. During this time, ships wishing to sail from the port of Scheveningen must obtain a permit. This ensures that security precautions can be maintained during the NATO summit.
The residents and businesses in the area are not the only ones affected by these measures. The general public is also noticeably affected by the traffic restrictions and the high level of security precautions. The ANWB warns against evasive traffic on secondary roads and recommends a comprehensive information campaign to prepare the public for the situation.
With the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, the authorities are facing an enormous challenge, which they are meeting with extensive security and traffic concepts. The coming weeks will be crucial to ensure that the international meeting runs safely and smoothly. More information can be found in the articles from Ruhr24 and roof is.
