World Heritage Day 2025: Discover Germany's UNESCO treasures on June 1st!
June 1, 2025 is dedicated to UNESCO World Heritage Day, which is celebrated under the motto “Mediate, connect, inspire”. On this special day, numerous events throughout Germany invite you to get to know the 54 monuments and nature reserves that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Over the past 20 years, these sites have helped deepen understanding of our natural and cultural heritage, such as welterbedeutschland.de reported.
The nationwide opening of this special day of action will take place in Hildesheim, where St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Church are simultaneously celebrating their 40th anniversary. Some of the most important world heritage sites take center stage in Lower Saxony. These include the old town of Goslar and the Rammelsberg mine, both of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Diverse programs in the north
A rich program is offered for visitors to Lower Saxony. Guided tours, concerts and a drawing workshop are planned in Hildesheim, while climbing the church tower and craft activities for children are offered. The Rammelsberg mine is hosting a family festival, which also includes a flea market and steam locomotive rides. The Walkenried Monastery also invites you to paid guided tours and free entry. An exciting world heritage run with different route lengths takes place around the Fagus factory in Alfeld.

But it's not just Lower Saxony that is active. In Bremen, the town hall and the Roland are the focus, with free tours that draw attention to the world heritage. Schleswig-Holstein celebrates the Viking settlement of Haithabu and the Danewerk ramparts with walks on historical grounds and free tours in Hollingstedt and city tours in Lübeck.
Experiences around the world heritage
In Hamburg, the Speicherstadt, together with the Kontorhausviertel, which also includes the Chilehaus, is offering an anniversary with free tours, dance courses and exhibitions. Parents can take part in family tours of the Speicherstadt, which are also aimed specifically at younger visitors.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania attracts visitors with Schwerin Castle and the residential ensemble, which offer special experiences. Similar tours and child-friendly activities such as puppet shows and digital treasure hunts are available in Stralsund and Wismar. Anyone interested can also take part in guided tours in the Jasmund National Park on Rügen, which draw attention to the Old Beech Forests World Natural Heritage Site.
A World Heritage photography competition will also be announced, in which the most creative images will be awarded prizes. Downloadable virtual tours and videos are available for visitors to fully explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
