Tourism peak in the Viersen district: 158,200 overnight stays in 2025!

In the first half of 2025, the Viersen district recorded around 158,200 overnight stays from guests from home and abroad. This information comes from the Food-Pleasure-Gastronomy Union (NGG) and is based on current tourism figures from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Statistical Office (IT.NRW). The increased number of overnight stays is a positive sign for tourism development in the region.

The reasons for visits to the Viersen district are varied and include vacation trips, day trips, business trips, visiting relatives, medical treatments and further training. Ina Korte-Grimberg, managing director of NGG Krefeld-Neuss, expressly points out the importance of every single overnight stay for the hotel and restaurant industry. Nevertheless, she warns of a “dangerous trend” in the industry: the increase in temporary workers is accompanied by a decrease in skilled workers, which could potentially affect the quality of the kitchen and service.

Tourism as an economic factor

A study commissioned by Niederrhein Tourismus has highlighted the economic impact of tourism on the region. The survey, which was carried out by the consulting company dwif, shows that a total of 5.3 million overnight stays were recorded in the districts of Heinsberg, Kleve, Viersen and Wesel. This number also includes overnight stays that were not recorded, such as in smaller establishments with fewer than 10 beds. The number of overnight stays is almost at the level before the corona pandemic.

What is particularly noteworthy is the great importance of day tourism in the region: last year, around 40 million day trips were counted, which is 16.5 times more than the number of overnight stays registered. According to the study results, the total gross tourism turnover in the region amounts to more than 1.4 billion euros.

Opportunities and challenges

Sales also include intermediate services such as energy supply and construction, while the first sales tier includes catering, accommodation, grocery stores and retail. State tax revenue from tourism amounts to more than 132 million euros. The total tourism income contribution, which is counted both directly and indirectly, is around 658.5 million euros.

The study highlights that tourism can employ 24,000 people in the region. This not only contributes to increasing the attractiveness of the location for companies, but also improves the quality of life of the local population. In view of this data, Korte-Grimberg calls for the hotel and catering industry in the Viersen district to be perceived as a professional industry in order to effectively address the challenges in the industry.

In the context of these developments, it remains to be seen how the tourism structures in the region will continue to develop and what measures will be taken to ensure the quality of the offer and to meet the challenges of the market.
