Austrians travel despite inflation: summer holidays by the sea are trending!
Given rising costs and financial challenges, 96% of Austrians plan to travel at least once this summer. This is shown by a survey by the ÖAMTC, which was carried out on 1,000 people between the ages of 18 and 69. Around 70% of those surveyed would like to travel abroad, while around 50% are planning a holiday in Austria. Only 4% are undecided or have no plans for a summer vacation. Despite inflationary tendencies, Austrians are keen to travel.
At the time of the survey at the beginning of April, 40% of those surveyed had already booked their vacation. Compared to previous years, booking behavior has remained stable. In summer 2024, actual travel activity was 89%, while 95% of respondents expressed travel plans. The main reasons against traveling are affordability, time and health reasons. The average holiday budget for 2025 is 1,233 euros per person, an increase of 171 euros compared to last year.
Popular travel destinations and means of transportation
When it comes to travel destinations, there is a clear preference for holidays by the water: 58% of those surveyed prefer a holiday by the sea, with Italy and Croatia being the most popular destinations. Greece, Germany and Spain are also very popular. Within Austria, Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria are the favorite federal states for a holiday at home. Interestingly, almost 60% of those surveyed chose a holiday by the sea, with families and travelers under 30 particularly preferring this form of relaxation.
The main means of transport in summer 2025 will be privately used cars. 71% of travelers plan to travel by car. Of these, 37% only use the car, while 21% prefer a combination of car and plane and 13% combine the car with the train. Families with children are increasingly using cars, while 31% of solo travelers choose the train as a means of transport. Travelers under 40, on the other hand, prefer rental cars.
Saving without giving up
The financial conditions force many people to plan their travel costs carefully. According to the survey, 60% of respondents say they need to save this year, and 20% say they need to save a lot. This savings potential is seen primarily in the choice of accommodation, local expenses and the number and duration of trips. Many travelers make sure to choose cheaper accommodation and reduce the costs of dining out and excursions.
The survey confirms the trend that despite attempts to minimize costs, Austrians' desire to travel seems unbroken. The need for relaxation, time with family and friends and enjoying the sun are clearly at the forefront of travel motivations.
