Perfect return travel tips: How to avoid traffic jams after your vacation!
The summer holidays are coming to an end in Germany. In eight of sixteen federal states, students have already enjoyed their last weeks of vacation. As a result, many travelers are preparing to return home from vacation in the coming days. In order to prevent the all-too-frequent traffic jams on the motorways, the ADAC has made special recommendations to help optimize the return journey.
Especially on classic return travel days, such as Saturday, traffic jams often occur from early morning until late afternoon. The ADAC recommends planning your departure before 8 a.m. or in the evening between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. On Sunday, however, only a moderate amount of traffic is expected in the morning. However, from midday onwards, especially between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the likelihood of traffic jams increases and will decrease again after 5 p.m. Travelers should plan their return journey hastily and choose a suitable day of the week, with flexibility particularly recommended during the week. The best days for the return journey are Tuesday or Wednesday, as the traffic volume is usually lower.
Current traffic information from Cologne
For travelers coming from the A4 or A59, various diversions are available to avoid the construction site. Coming from the direction of Heerlen/Aachen, you should take the exit from the A4 at AD Köln-Heumar and then take the A3 towards Frankfurt. Alternatively, you can take a diversion from the A59 coming from Bonn at the Cologne-Porz motorway triangle.
Tips for the return journey
- Samstags besser vor 8 Uhr oder zwischen 20 und 22 Uhr abfahren.

- Flexibel bei der Rückreise unter der Woche planen, idealerweise Dienstag oder Mittwoch.
The current recommendations and the construction site situation make it clear how important it is to plan your return journey carefully.
