Where is Philosopher Falls Tasmania

Philosopher Falls is located near the city of Waratah in northwestern Tasmania. He flows on Arthur River, the wild river that flows from the mountains to the sea.

You will find the short unpaved road to the parking lot of the waterfall directly on the Waratah Road, about 75 minutes from Devonport or a long 4.5-hour drive from Hobart.

I attached the exact position of the waterfall below so that you can find it easier. However, you can follow the instructions below if you have problems finding the parking lot.

Remember that there is little or no mobile phone reception as soon as you are out here. Therefore, I suggest either loading the card or maintaining this blog on your device before you set off.

How do I get here

The parking lot with access to the Philosopher Falls Track is located on the "Butler Road", an unpaved but well -kept road that is about 600 meters long. If you insert the card PIN above, you should be able to find it with Google Maps without any problems.

, however, it is admittedly easy to miss the junction to the butler road. If you get lost, it helps to know that Butler Road is exactly 9.6 kilometers west of Waratah on the Waratah Road. On the Butler Road, a sign shows the way to the Philosopher's Falls, so keep your eyes open.

Since it is a remote Tassie waterfall, you naturally have to have your own means of transport, as there are no public transport or guided tours that go on an excursion here. But don't worry, if you don't have your own car, you can rent one in Tasmania at Rentalcars.com or even Car Next door at any time.

If this is not an option, I also added my list of top 3 must-do activities in the region.

Hiking route and back
Duration: 1 hour back and forth
Mostly flat with a short stairs descent at the end
difficulty: Simple

okay, I mentioned it in intro, but seriously, the rainforest path to the Philosopher Falls is not of this world! It is one of the best examples of how incredibly beautiful this region is.

The route itself is also quite easy to navigate and cross. At the Philosopher Falls Walk, there have been some developments lately that make it even easier.

The route is mostly flat and follows a winding path for about a kilometer before reaching a flowing stream that is a tributary of Arthur River. From here they duck under a large overhanging rock and follow an artificial path down to the last stairs to the viewing platform of the waterfall. This descent may be the most difficult part of the hike, but will not be a problem for most people. There is a rail on both sides, so it's super sure!

At the base, you have a great viewpoint on the two plus stages of the Philosopher Falls from a distance of around 30 meters. Unfortunately there is no way to get completely down. Fortunately, the view from here is spectacular and a great place to take a few photos.

philosopher falls

Philosopher Falls is a spectacular waterfall. It is surrounded by dense, green rainforest and falls steeply on a steep, fern -covered wall.

Apparently it was once possible to go down all the way to the foot of the waterfall on the east side of Arthur River. However, this track is no longer accessible.

Philosopher Falls himself was named after a James “Philosopher” Smith, who discovered tin at Mt. Bischoff near Waratah in 1871.

Note that Philosopher is not dog -friendly.
