Plau am See: Retailers introduce siesta - cooling down for holidaymakers!
In midsummer it gets increasingly hot in northern Germany, so many people seek to cool off in seas, lakes or cool indoor spaces. In Plau am See, retailers and restaurants are reacting to the changing behavior of holidaymakers, who mostly spend their days on the beach. Based on this observation, Cornelia Eggenwirth, operator of the second-hand shop “ClassiCo”, developed the idea of introducing a siesta based on the Mediterranean model. This initiative is intended to enable holidaymakers to shop and eat in the city center in the evening.
The siesta is signaled by yellow flags hanging in front of the shops. These flags serve not only to indicate the midday break, but also to provide information about when stores will reopen. Traders have decided that no set temperature or weather conditions will be taken into account for the siesta, but that everyone will decide individually.
A better deal for vacationers
The opening times of the shops adapt to the rhythm of holidaymakers. The shops should reopen from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. when guests return from beach activities. In addition to “ClassiCo”, the participating shops also include the hotel and restaurant Haus Sajons, Caroline Handmade as well as the adventure and water sports shop and the salon “Hairfree”. Cornelia Eggenwirth also plans to open her shop on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offer visitors a surprise.
Steinstrasse in Plau am See, a shopping mile, is hardly frequented on hot summer days, which shows that tourist numbers are stagnating. Last year around 481,000 overnight stays were recorded in Plau am See. In order to revive the economy and tourism, the city is looking for new concepts such as the siesta. From June 1st, the lift bridge will also be closed to car traffic during the season as a test in order to offer pedestrians and cyclists more space and further increase the city's attractiveness.
attractiveness of the region
Plau am See, located on the western shore of Lake Plauer and on the Müritz-Elde waterway, acts as the western gateway to the Müritz region and the Mecklenburg Lake District. The city has Slavic roots and was granted city rights in 1235. Its old town is characterized by half-timbered and brick houses, which reflect the historic charm of the city.
Plau am See is also known as the city of three towers because the castle tower, church tower and lighthouse are accessible to visitors. The city can be reached from Hamburg or Berlin in less than two hours by car. The surrounding area is a terminal moraine landscape with meadows, fields, forests and lakes, which is ideal for water sports enthusiasts - sailing, surfing, motorboating, paddling, diving and swimming are popular activities in the region. Fishing from water or land is also very popular.
A 60 km long hiking and cycling path around Lake Plauer, which is partly developed and partly left in its natural state, invites you to explore the beautiful landscape. Restaurants and hotels along the way ensure a pleasant stay, while the Plauer circular bus is available for excursions. These diverse options make Plau am See an attractive destination for tourists looking for relaxation and leisure activities.
Overall, the Siesta initiative shows the city's desire to develop further and respond to the needs of holidaymakers in order to bring more life back to the city center.
