Police prevent reoccupation of the legendary mutiny” in Kreuzberg

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the Berlin police were able to prevent the occupation of an empty bar in Kreuzberg. Around 30 people broke into the premises of the former trendy bar “Meuterei” on the corner of Reichenberger Strasse and Lausitzer Strasse in the afternoon. This reports rbb24.

The police responded immediately to the incident and brought the squatters out again. During the operation, the officers carried out an identity check. Around 100 people had gathered in front of the building, including sympathizers and onlookers. To secure the situation, a contingent of around 100 emergency services was mobilized. The situation was quickly brought under control and, as things stand, there were no injuries.

The background to the “mutiny”

The “Meuterei” pub was founded in 2009 by the collective of the same name as an autonomous project and for a long time served as a networking location for the radical left-wing scene. The problem surrounding the restaurant escalated in March 2021 when the eviction was carried out by a bailiff with the help of the police. The operator refused to vacate the building after the lease expired, but lost in court. The owner, who was offered the space in 2020 at a price of 750,000 euros, ruled out extending the lease, which the collective considered unacceptable.

The eviction was anything but peaceful. There were pyrotechnics, attacks on police officers, stone throwing and several arrests. On the night of the evacuation, high-value vehicles burned throughout the city and the facade of the building that was important to the scene was damaged.

Another attempt at occupation

On Thursday, left-wing extremist activists tried again to occupy the restaurant. While some of the squatters chained themselves in the premises to avoid being taken away by the police, a spontaneous demonstration formed in the area. This was disrupted by an aggressive scuffle. According to eyewitness reports, slogans such as “Fuck you Germany” and “Fuck you Israel” could be heard from the support group. Supporters from the pro-Palestinian spectrum also took part in the meeting, such as Apollo News reported.

Overall, the situation around the former trendy bar “Meuterei” remains tense. The police have apparently already responded to these currents in the right-wing extremist spectrum in the past and will continue to be prepared to prevent potential clashes in the future.
