Radisson brings carbon neutral hotel to Manchester: A new standard!
Radisson Hotel Group has taken a significant step towards sustainable travel with the launch of its new hotel brand, Verified Net Zero. On May 24, 2025, the brand's first hotel, the Radisson Hotel Manchester City Center, opened its doors. The aim of this initiative is to enable guests to have a CO₂-neutral stay.
The Radisson Hotel Manchester City Center offers 252 guest rooms and suites, which have been decorated in Scandinavian design following an extensive renovation. What is particularly noteworthy is that the hotel aims to comply with the Net Zero methodology for hotels by 2024. This methodology covers three important emissions areas: Scope 1 (direct emissions such as heating or cooling), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity) and Scope 3 (indirect emissions from the value chain, such as food and transport).
Long-term environmental goals
Radisson's long-term goal is to eliminate all avoidable Scope 3 emissions by 2040 and offset the remaining emissions. The new hotel uses 100% renewable energy for heating, cooling, hot water and the spa areas. It also attaches great importance to minimizing waste and optimizing supply chains to reduce emissions. Unavoidable emissions are offset by CO₂ certificates from our partner Agreena.
To offer dishes with a low carbon footprint, Radisson is working with Klimato. This includes classifying the food offerings according to their carbon footprint from A to E. The menus focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, which contributes to a CO₂ reduction of up to 40%.
Challenges for the industry
The hotel industry faces an urgent challenge to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 66% by 2030 compared to 2010. The overall goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Futouris' Hotels Go Net Zero project aims to address these challenges by carrying out precise measurements, analysis and reductions of hotels' climate footprint.
As part of this project, various pilot hotels are working together, which were selected by DERTOUR Group, Schauinsland Reisen and Hotelplan Group. Experts from blueContec and myclimate support this process. The use of the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) enables detailed analysis of the collected data and the development of specific goals and measures in collaboration with hotel teams.
A central focus of the project is on Scope 3 emissions, which are crucial for the hotels' overall emissions profile. This shows that sustainable travel is enormously important not only for the individual, but also for the industry as a whole.
Those responsible at Radisson Hotel Group and the partners involved are convinced that the “Verified Net Zero” initiative can make a significant contribution to reducing emissions within the hotel industry and will serve as a model for future projects.
