New tourism hype in Bodenheim: wines, hikes and more!

The start of the new tourism season in Bodenheim is all about enjoyment and community. The mobile wine stand and the tourist information office have opened their doors to offer guests a varied program. Particularly noteworthy is the start of the season “Am Turm” at St. Alban, which attracted over 200 visitors. For 2023, more than 3,000 guests are expected on Sundays and public holidays, including numerous wine lovers who want to enjoy the wines of local winemakers, such as the Bodenheim winery “Sonnenhof”.

The tourist information center, led by Carolin Molina and supported by nine volunteers, presents a diverse range of offerings. These include guided tours for new residents, hut hikes, historical walks and special themed tours. Future plans envisage greater integration of the local history museum into tourist offerings in order to make the region's history more tangible.

Innovative plans and challenges

A future-oriented newsletter and increased use of social media should help to make the tourist offers better known. New tours “from winery to winery” are also planned, which will offer guests a direct connection to the producers. Heidi Veit-Gönner, councilor for tourism, is working with five municipalities in the municipality on a joint tourism concept. However, there are challenges, such as the decline in catering establishments, such as ostrich restaurants, which are cause for concern.

In order to enhance the local history museum, a proposal is being discussed to include personal stories from citizens. Central projects provide for a 17 kilometer long circular hiking trail that includes all local communities in the association. This route could offer adventure stations for children, relaxation areas and culinary stops and would further increase the attractiveness of the region.

Tourist infrastructure and offers

For the success of tourism, close networking between restaurants, winemakers and hosts is essential. As part of these efforts, five young winemakers have joined forces to form the “Vinoration B” initiative to provide fresh inspiration. In addition, a new sanitary container was implemented in the camper area at St. Alban to meet the needs of travelers.

Another important step into the future is the opening of the Rheinterrassenweg, a themed hiking trail that connects the Rhine towns in Rheinhessen. This 80 kilometer long path offers hikers an enjoyable experience and is to be professionally looked after through central path management and appropriate financial resources. The success of the Rhine Terrace Trail depends heavily on the professionalization of tourism structures. Comparable paths such as the Rheinsteig or the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig show how important competitiveness is in tourism. The collaboration with Rheinhessen-Touristik GmbH and the Tourism and Spa Association of Rhineland-Palatinate e.V. ensures that the course is set for a successful future.

The challenges are noticeable, but the anticipation of a lively tourism season in Bodenheim, characterized by wine culture and wonderful nature, is unbroken. The commitment of everyone involved gives hope for successful development.
