Tourism low in Rhineland-Palatinate: decline despite the Ahr region on the upswing!
Ahr-Region, Deutschland - In the first three months of 2024, Rhineland-Palatinate recorded a decline in visitor numbers compared to the previous year. Loudsueddeutsche.deA total of 1.3 million tourists were welcomed, which corresponds to a decline of 1.3 percent. At the same time, the number of overnight stays fell by 6.8 percent to 3.2 million overnight stays. The numbers decreased in particular in nine out of ten tourism regions in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The AHR region is a special feature, where the number of guests could increase by 17 percent and the overnight stays by 12 percent. However, against the background of a low level of the previous year, these growth are to be considered due to the flood disaster in 2021. Despite this positive development, the number of overnight stays in the AHR region is still a good third below the comparative value of 2019.
Annual balance 2024
Nationwide, Rhineland-Palatinate can have only 2.9 percent behind the overnight stays of 2019. Germany overall exceeded the level of 2019 by 0.1 percent. The AHR region in particular remains affected by the long-term consequences of the flood disaster, and without this region there was only 0.3 percent below the 2019 figures.
Regional developments
In detail, it shows that five out of ten regions in Rhineland-Palatinate 2024 were able to exceed the number of overnight stays of the previous year. The Ahr region leads this list with an increase of 23.2 percent, followed by Eifel (+5.4 %), Rheinhessen (+4.9 %), Naheland (+2.3 %) and Westerwald (+0.4 %). In contrast, Hunsrück and Mosel-Saar recorded declines of 4.1 percent or 5.3 percent.
The developments in city tourism are also particularly noteworthy. Mainz had an increase of 8.9 percent, while cities such as Speyer and Trier fell at -4.8 and -1.8 percent. Basically, the number of overnight stays in holiday centers increased by 8.9 percent and in pension and rehabilitation clinics by 6.1 percent, while the hotel industry experienced a slight decline.
A total of 3,125 commercial accommodation companies in Rhineland-Palatinate 2024 offered a total of 222,299 sleeping facilities. Nevertheless, the number of companies fell by 4.2 percent, while capacity rose by 0.9 percent. With 71.1 beds, the average company size remained quite low in a nationwide comparison.
