In the first three months of 2024, Rhineland-Palatinate recorded a decline in the number of visitors compared to the previous year. Nationwide, Rhineland-Palatinate is only 2.9 percent behind the number of overnight stays in 2019. Germany as a whole exceeded the 2019 level by 0.1 percent. The Ahr region in particular remains affected by the long-term consequences of the flood disaster, and without this region, Rhineland-Palatinate would only be 0.3 percent below the 2019 figures.
Regional developments
The details show that five out of ten regions in Rhineland-Palatinate were able to exceed the number of overnight stays from the previous year in 2024. The Ahr region leads this list with an increase of 23.2 percent, followed by Eifel (+5.4%), Rheinhessen (+4.9%), Naheland (+2.3%) and Westerwald (+0.4%). In contrast, Hunsrück and Mosel-Saar recorded declines of 4.1 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively.
Developments in city tourism are also particularly noteworthy. Mainz recorded an increase of 8.9 percent, while cities like Speyer and Trier fell in the numbers at -4.8 and -1.8 percent. In general, the number of overnight stays in holiday centers rose by 8.9 percent and in prevention and rehabilitation clinics by 6.1 percent, while the hotel industry experienced a slight decline.
A total of 3,125 commercial accommodation providers in Rhineland-Palatinate offered a total of 222,299 sleeping accommodations in 2024. Nevertheless, the number of companies fell by 4.2 percent, while capacities increased by 0.9 percent. The average size of the company remained relatively low compared to the rest of the country at 71.1 beds.
