Women's power on the go: Kelkheim discovery tour through Saarland!

On September 4, 2025, the Catholic women's community of St. Martin Kelkheim-Hornau went on an unforgettable group trip to Saarland. The trip took the participants to historic cities, breathtaking landscapes and cultural highlights of the region.

The first day began with the journey to Saarbrücken, with the group making a stopover in Beilstein on the Moselle. During a city tour in Beilstein, which is also known as the “Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle”, travelers were able to enjoy the picturesque view of the surrounding area and fortify themselves with coffee and cake.

City tours and cultural experiences

On the second day, a visit to the state capital Saarbrücken was on the agenda. An informative city tour introduced the travelers to the most important sights. A special highlight was the short meeting with Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger. We then went to the Villeroy & Boch Experience World in Mettlach, where the group explored the fascinating exhibition, which illuminates the topics of design, manufacturing processes and product worlds on over 2,000 m². The adventure center is not only a cultural highlight, but also a popular excursion destination that can be visited Monday to Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m reports the Villeroy & Boch Experience Center.

The third day took the group to the oldest city in Germany, Trier. Here they were able to discover the Roman history of the city on a tour. On the way back to Saarland, the town of St. Wendel was visited before there was a rich buffet in the hotel in the evening.

Historical city explorations and culinary delights

On the fourth day, the former fortress town of Saarlouis with its historic old town was on the program. We then went to the wine town of Saarburg, where the travelers visited the town hall, the fruit market, the butter market and the picturesque “Little Venice” corner. Culinary specialties, including refreshing ice cream sundaes, rounded off the day. A boat trip on the Maria Croon took the group to the viewpoint of the impressive Saar loop.

On the last day of the trip there was still time for a stop in Bad Dürkheim on the way back to Kelkheim. The participants enjoyed walks along the salt pans and through the spa gardens before they began their return journey. Overall, the trip gave a deep impression of the landscape, culture and history of Saarland.

The St. Martin Catholic Women's Community has been organizing a multi-day trip for women every year since 1954, although there have been only a few exceptions in recent years due to the pandemic. This tradition not only strengthens the community, but also promotes the discovery of new regions and cultures.
