Fascination with the organ: Big bus tour through Saxony's sound worlds!
On July 1, 2025, Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing (LTM) GmbH is announcing an exciting bus tour under the title “Faszination Organ”. This cultural trip will take place on October 25, 2025 and offers participants the opportunity to discover the sounds and stories of historic organs in the Leipzig region. The tour leads to three fascinating organ locations: the town church of St. Marien in Torgau, the castle church in Torgau and the church in Trossin.
The entire bus tour lasts around eight hours and begins and ends at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. The travel price is 89 euros per person and includes the bus transfer, a travel companion, church tours, organ playing and lunch in the “Schmidtalien” restaurant in Dommitzsch. A sweet afternoon snack completes the offer. This tour promises not only musical highlights, but also deeper insights into the structural and tonal characteristics of the organs.
Historical significance of the organ landscape in Saxony
Saxony is considered one of the most important organ regions in Germany, a fact that can be traced back through its historical roots to the late Gothic period. In the 17th century, an independent organ landscape developed here, which today houses around 2,500 organs. Of these, over 130 historical instruments from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved, many of them influenced by the work of the well-known organ builder Gottfried Silbermann.
The oldest documented organ in Saxony, which dates back to 1298, is in the St. Peter's Church in Görlitz. Continuing this tradition, the organ was documented in Meissen Cathedral in 1362, in Bautzen Cathedral in 1372 and in St. Mary's Church in Zwickau in 1383. The developments in organ building, especially in the Baroque period under Silbermann, are famous for their high quality and longevity.
Brochure and registration
To further deepen the topic, LTM GmbH has published a free brochure entitled “Faszination Organ”, which presents organs in the Leipzig region as well as concert highlights. This brochure is available at the Leipzig Tourist Information Office and is also available online. Those interested have the opportunity to obtain further information about the bus tour and to register at www.faszination-orgel.de pick up.
Overall, the upcoming bus tour not only reflects the great tradition of organ building in Saxony, but also the commitment to preserving these sonorous treasures and making them accessible to a wider audience. While Saxony's organ landscape has been inspiring for centuries, it is still a place of fascination and inspiration for many music lovers and those interested in culture today.
