Serious accident in Mexico: Two-year-old Olli fights for survival!
In the tragic context of a vacation in Mexico, the Staub family from Heidenheim, Baden-Württemberg, suffered serious injuries in a traffic accident. Olli, a two-year-old boy, and his brother Oliver, who is only one year old, were seriously injured. The accident occurred in Zihuatanejo when the family van, a Toyota Sienna, collided with a cash van and was then thrown into a lamppost. While Oliver was in a coma for a week and required extensive medical treatment, Olli was so seriously injured that initial predictions about his chances of survival were extremely pessimistic. Despite this, Olli is now recovering after spending 39 days in hospital, but is unable to return to Germany.
The circumstances of Olli's return to Germany are extremely complicated because he still has a long time to recover. However, the little boy, who has broken several cervical vertebrae and suffers from paraplegia, shows partial sensation in his body and is learning to communicate using sign language. Therapeutic support is essential for him, and the family is temporarily living in Olli's in-laws' house in Tacambaro, Mexico, where Olli's father-in-law has converted a party room into a hospital room. They receive support from three nurses who help during his recovery.
Oliver's health condition
For Oliver, who suffered more serious injuries and was without oxygen for 20 minutes, the medical prognosis now looks more positive. Doctors indicated that he suffered no brain damage, although he is dealing with an upper cervical vertebra fracture (C1 to C3). A total of three more operations on the chest and stomach are necessary before Oliver can come home in 8 to 12 weeks. His future room will be equipped with a ventilator to ensure the necessary care. The family was able to count on an impressive wave of solidarity: a fundraising campaign collected over 70,000 euros to ease the family's financial worries.
The emotional burden on the family
The emotional burden on the Staub family is enormous. Olli's brother Oliver had to spend most of his first birthday in the hospital, and even Olli's second birthday fell on June 1st, which he spent in intensive care. Olli was released from the hospital on June 4th, and the family plans to celebrate his birthday on June 5th with gifts that will include Stitch T-shirts. However, it will be impossible for the family to return to Germany for at least a year, which further increases the difficulties during this difficult time.
