Bizarre stories from 50 years: A look at underdogs and leaders
The legendary television show “Outsider Favoritenreiter” has been setting standards on German television since its premiere in 1972. The show addresses the bizarre aspects of everyday life in a humorous and creative way and portrays people with special hobbies and idiosyncrasies. On June 25, 2022, the show celebrated its 50th birthday and is considered the longest-running entertainment program in Germany. Not only is this a remarkable achievement, but it is also a sign of the format's continued popularity.
The current season, titled “Outsider Leaders: The Great Journey,” is led by presenter Madeleine Wehle. In this new episode, she takes viewers to historic locations that have been featured on the show over the years. So she returns to the scene of an article from 1988, when the resident of the narrowest house in Eisenach was portrayed. Interestingly, it is unclear who lives in this house today.
Variety of bizarre topics
The production contains many bizarre and amusing episodes. A particularly momentous report came from 1981, when reporter Hans-Joachim Wolfram reported on a riot in Quedlinburg that was sparked by nude photos in a shop window. Another notable post shows employees at a razor blade factory in Eisfeld who came to work unshaven to test their products. After this special test, the employees were allowed back into the factory.
On the journey, Wehle and the audience also encounter other interesting places, including a ferry in Bad Kösen, a former condom delivery company in Dresden and the crookedest football pitch in Chemnitz. These bizarre spots in Central Germany are explored across the region, so that the variety of stories that the show offers is once again showcased.
A look back at 50 years
A 120-minute special program was planned for the anniversary, looking back on 50 years of television history. This special edition is enriched by former presenters and guests who contributed to the history of the show. Christine Stüber-Errath will share her personal experiences, and other Former participants such as Waldemar Cierpinski and Ekkehard Vogler will also celebrate the anniversary with Wehle.
The show remains a distinctive part of German television and always offers its viewers a unique insight into the extraordinary and often surprising stories that life writes. This mix of entertainment, nostalgia and bizarre events makes “Outsider Top Rider” a special show that will remain relevant in the future.
