Styx Tall Trees Walk - where you can see Tasmanian giant trees

A short guide to see Tasmanian Giant Trees on the Styx Tall Trees Walk. Contains everything you need to know to get to the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area what awaits you and photos of my visit.

Many people visit Tasmania to witness one of the last, really wild places on earth. A visit to the southern forests of Tasmania gives you a look at some of the highest and largest trees in the southern hemisphere.

One of the best places to see some of the largest trees in Tasmania is the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area. The styx is a recently added forest reserve that is the result of a bitter but successful activism campaign. This location today protects some of the highest flowering trees in the world, some of which are higher than 90 meters and have a circumference of over 20 meters.

In this guide, I would like to give you a better understanding of where you can see the Tasmanian giant trees on the Styx Tall Trees Walk. I will also know everything you need to get here to come here, what awaits you and some information about these colossal miracles.

Where can you see Tasmanian giant trees?

While there are several places where you can see Tasmanian giant trees, the Styx Tall Trees Walk is the best in my opinion. This is because this small reserve is home to several tree giants that you can reach on a simple walk with boards in the lush Tasmanian rainforest.

The styx is also in relative proximity to Hobart, which makes it easier to get here than to other forest reserves with high trees in Tassie.

What types are the Tasmanian giant trees?

The largest trees in Tasmania are known as Eucalyptus Regnans or Mountain Ash (also Swamp Gum and Stringy Gum). This is the way the list of the largest trees in the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area. In fact, the Eucaluptus Regnan is the largest flowering plant in the world and the highest tree species of the southern hemisphere. The largest tree species is the Coast Redwood or Sequoia Sempervirens, of which the highest (115.92 meters) can be found in the Redwood forests of California.

The highest of all Tasmanian giant trees is Centurion, another Eucaluptus Regnan that is over 100.5 meters high (third highest tree in the world). However, this tree is located further south of Tasmania, and the locals do not like to reveal the exact location to contribute to the protection of the location.

But don't worry, the Tasmanier will welcome you to visit the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area, where you can admire many trees that are only a little shorter - your size will blow them around.

Eucalutps Regnans are trees with a straight trunk and smooth, gray bark. However, the base often has a trim of rough, brown bark. The leaves are lancet -shaped and shiny green.

About the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area

Unfortunately, a large part of the styx forest was devoted to the wood strike. After a long campaign organized by committed volunteers, however, the areas with the largest trees in the forest were integrated into the Tasmanian Wilderness world nature.

There are some sections of the Styx Forest Reserve, where you can see large trees. These include the Styx Big Tree Reserve, Tolkien Grove and the Outer Styx Valley.

However, if you visit the area to see some of the largest Tasmanian giant trees on a short walk, I would recommend just stopping past the Styx Tall Trees Walk (Styx Big Tree Reserve).

This area is incredibly beautiful and one of the most carbon -rich forests in the world. The leaf roof reaches over 90 meters and shadows a lavish undergrowth of myrtle, man ferns and lively Tasmanian bushes. The lifeline of this species -rich forest is the Styx River, which has a dark red color and delivers nutrients to the forest.

When you visited Mount Field and were impressed by the beauty of the forest, do yourself a favor and take a look at the styx. This is a beautiful representation of ancient forests in Tasmania, which are much wilder than Mount Field National Park.

How do I get here

There are two streets in the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area. However, only one is open to the public because the other is a private forest path. To get here, you must first drive to Maydena on the Gordon River Road. Do not make the mistake of traveling from the vicinity of Westerway. A locked gate often blocks access further down on the street.

Shortly behind Mayden to the west you can see an unpaved road called "Styx Road", an unpaved and bumpy road. But don't worry, we made it in our large motorhome, so most vehicles shouldn't have any problems.

As soon as you have arrived on the Styx Road, drive another 14 kilometers further before reaching a sign to the Big Tree Forest Reserve. There are enough parking spaces for cars and vans on the roadside. This is the starting point for the Styx Tall Trees Walk, where you can see some of the largest tree giants of Tasmania.

This route is a circular route that leads past some of the highest tree giants of Tasmania. Some of the largest trees are about halfway on a clearing. Keep out for wooden panels that give you the names of some of the largest trees.

The largest trees are "Big Tree" and the rival "Bigger Tree", The Devil’s PitchFork and the Chapel Tree.

We continue on the Styx River Walk

On the other side of the Styx Road, opposite the starting point of the Big Trees Walk, there is another nice short walk, which leads to the Styx River. This route is a back and back route that is also very simple and flat. This forest walk is incredible and offers visitors a look at the river at three different places.

While you will not find many Tasmanian giant trees on this hike, it is possible to go to Tolkien Grove from here. However, note that the traces are carved by the community after the river path and are often somewhat overgrown.
